OK, being in the field of Architecture, this is way cool. But the sheer scope of what they are doing and how quickly makes me irate to be paying $3.40/gallon for gas. And how does Donny "Da Comb-over" Trump have the cash to build a Mega Skyscraper there after all the bankruptcies? I'll never watch The Apprentice again.

Phallic symbol #1

And it'll fucking make a mess when some nut job decides to bring it down... 9/11 taught us hubris of 'reaching out to god'

Been to Dubui, just like all other muslim countries (or anywhere else): Rich fucks and the scum of the earth...

Two International Finance Center reminds me of a launch/landing bay on Galactica. Or the ship itself.

I remember seeing the plans for those islands someplace.

Kinda looks like a giant nose-hair trimmer to me.

I knew I had seen a similar design.... Frank Lloyd Wright's Mile High Tower for Broadacre City.

Nothing like Plagiarism

What ever happened to normal looking buildings? It's like he's building that to show Rosie O'donnel that he has something she doesn't. Great, just what we need. A pissing match between two fat and angry rich white men.

The Freedom Tower will be the biggest disappointment in New York City history. Nobody(except the politicians)likes it, it looks fragile as hell, and they keep adding these lame ass ideas to it. Windmills? Are you kitting me? Will they also make the inside look like Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory?

About time we started having some advanced future-looking architecture, Seriously, this whole "building the same way for 4000 years" is ticking me off.

Posted by Mars Needs Women (Member # 1505) on :

I'm all for future looking buildings, except when they look like shit.(ie Freedom Tower)

Posted by Sean (Member # 2010) on :

Why cant they try to build a huge donught, or a 100 story star shaped building( from the top view)?
Or a huge 80 story dome? Well, that too would look phallic. Me must find a solution to this problem.... To the nerd cave...... Deeee deedee deeeee!

As far as the Trump building goes, I would think that the fact that it has that opening in the middle makes it the exact opposite of a phallic symbol.

You're sorely behind the times, dude. Melania Knauss Trump now. Wife #3.

I work for a quantity surveying company, their business in Dubia is booming. Hoping to swing a trip out there at some point.

Wow, Dubai is building Orthanc! Cool! It'll even get an Isengard-ish circle plain surrounding it.

"Freedom Tower", the whole name reads like Doublespeak...

Have you seen pictures of places like Dubai 10 years ago, and now? It's just insane.

I know someone who took a job in Qatar. He's only got a bachelor degree, but he got a job as a lab instructor in a college over there, for $35,000USD/year, $5,000 a year gas allowance (although gas is *astonishingly* cheap there, anyway), total medical insurance (free, no premiums), flyer miles, paid vacation, and a free apartment for him and his wife. Business is indeed booming in that general vicinity.

$35000USD/year isn't all that impressive. That's like, below starting salary for an engineering degree. Here in Canada. Which is why I've gone into so much debt to get one. [Frown]

"$35000USD/year isn't all that impressive. That's like, below starting salary for an engineering degree. Here in Canada."

Yeah, but what's cost-of-living in Qatar? And a free apartment and free gas?

According to this Canadian Cost of Living website, Qatar is a '25' and Toronto Canada is a '47.'

Posted by Fabrux (Member # 71) on :

Well, that's what I'm saying. Depending on where you are, the cost of living could be prohibitive. $35k/yr in Vancouver, Edmonton or Toronto would barely get you by...

Well, a single bedroom apartment in Red Deer costs about $800 a month, and that's for a scum-hole place where drug dealers live.

I always thought the Burj al Arab was a beautiful building. I'd love to stay there for a night.

Posted by Fabrux (Member # 71) on :

$800/mo here in Fredericton will get you a two-bedroom duplex, if you know where to look (actually it was $750 I think). But, depending on where else you look, you could be paying $1200 for a two bedroom apartment. Its a university town, so some places jack up the rent.

As for the Burj al-Arab, you're probably looking at something like $800/night...

Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :

Yeah, this friend was actually from Canada, weirdly enough [Wink] But that's my point, the $35k is almost all free money - he doesn't really have to buy anything but food, from the benefits he gets.

Might it be hazard pay?

Posted by WizArtist II (Member # 1425) on :

What hazard? I mean...SURE you're going to a part of the world where there are thousands if not millions that would not mind seeing someone go "highlander" on you on Al Jazeera.

But you can't get a vacation like that at Disney World!

I was under the impression that Qatar is a wor-torn area. A quick check of wikipedia has kicked that impression's ass.

Posted by Fabrux (Member # 71) on :

Hell yeah. Qatar is on the Arabian peninsula, and like most countries is hella rich from oil revenues.

I was thinking today of how cool Atlantis looks. I want that kind of architecture in a huuuuge planned city. With socialism. And mandatory Lantean-style clothing.

If I get Gatesianly rich, I'm building it.

Posted by Fabrux (Member # 71) on :

I'll design the supports for it!

Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :

I wonder about leveling (literally) an area the size of Manhattan, paving it over with concrete and metal to get a totally flat surface, and building the city on top with a 'floor' of its own on shock supports to the surface underneath, as anti-earthquake protection. (Also one day they can go ahead and build engines underneath hurrrr fanboy)

Posted by Sean (Member # 2010) on :

Or you could use your wealth to build a giant transforming city a la Fortress Maximus...

Posted by Fabrux (Member # 71) on :

You want to pave an area the size of Manhattan completely flat? Do you have any idea how hard it is to get a 14000 sqft building's floor flat?

A few nukes, natural disasters or a Godzilla or three usually help public domain issues like that, Fabrux.... [Smile]

Fabrux: The Egyptians managed it.... ;P
