Isn't is kind of redundant to have a swimming pool right near the beach? So close, infact, that a shark can be thrown in by a wave...

Oh, thank God. I thought you were actually going to link to an article announcing Jaws 5.

Sean: Some people get phobic about swimming in the ocean.

That reminded me of an interview of Tom Wilson I saw many years ago. He said he liked to sneak up behind ocean swimmers in a rowboat and start playing the Jaws theme on his Sousaphone. [Big Grin]

...and I've seen my fair share of suburban-tourist-mommies who have a heart attack every time their precious little 10-year-old encounters a wave higher than 1 foot at the shoreline. Not to mention the pool usually has a lifeguard whereas beaches have a "fend for yourself" policy.

I'd love to know how many people actually think that when a shark comes upon them, the JAWS theme will play...I understand that people can have misgivings about the ocean though. My grandmother thinks that there are sharks in Lake Erie. Maybe mutated sea bass...

I'd love to swim in the ocean. Or at least see the ocean in person.

A few years ago, the local news station bought itself a new helicopter with one of those super-zoom cameras (for traffic or following celebrities or whatever) and they took a flight over Fort lauderdale beach to show off all the summer swimmers.

There was literally a few hundred sharks just yards away from the swimmers (the sharks were just where the beach drops away to deeper ocean).
The sharks never bothered anyone and the swimmers were all blissfully ignorant of their presence.

The news made a big deal out of the "DANGER OF SHARKS IN OUR WATERS!" though.

What assholes.

A more accurate headline would be "DANGER OF HUMANS IN SHARK'S WATERS!".

Yes, but ratings can buy lots supositories, Tampax and Rolaids to justify such actions (Whut? local news morality? More like hypocracy...)

Still i gotta snicker (i got all my desire to swim over with during my tours in Italy and Florida)

I haven't clicked the link - but there are (and yes now i've clicked the link) tidal swimming pools a very common in Australia. They get refilled when the tide comes in. Was the fashion back a few decades ago.

Yeah, it would. But humans like to think everything on the planet is automatically theirs, regardless over what species actually has supremacy in a given terrain...
