Speak the hell up! Seriously, we get many new members all the time but so few of you participate in discussion. Are you shy? It's okay. Really. I know, conversing with such luminaries as We is a leap, but much as an aspiring writer must someday dig up the corpse of Hemmingway or Poe, you too must converse with Us, of the Flare.
True, we may sound like egotistical, crass jackasses but, honestly, that's just Shik...and Vanguard... and me... Okay, pretty much the entire memberlist.
Participate now and know the joys and pitfalls of such multi-page threads as: "I hate the GOP" or "Length of the Defiant". Call now, operators are standing by to take your contribution.

Unfortunately, it seems as if most new members who do speak up these days are here for spamming purposes.
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
They're afraid because Snay looks like Amish Charlie Brown. We'd have more members if we stopped posting pictures of ourselves. Also if we had a banner ad at some porno sites. Sci-Fi fans like porn, right? I'm just sayin'.
Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :
Hey, I'm not an egotistical, crass jackass! ...Am I?
Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :
Well I know I am.
Posted by Josh (Member # 1884) on :
Where are we at numberwise these days? Somewhere in the mid 2k I think?
Posted by Sean (Member # 2010) on :
We're at 490, according to the counter on the index page.
A lot of members who aren't spammers seem to vanish after a few posts. And, Jason, there's me...I'm not too egotistical.
Is it just me, or has posting slowed down here in general? Shikaru and Daniel are off in the military, which explains a bit of the silence, but it seems like there are fewer new threads posted now adays.
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
The general lack of new Sci-Fi just now is a real problem. Really, there's almost no sci-fi on TV aside from Terminator (which I dont watch, frankly).
Not much on the movie horizon past A-Trek, more Terminator and Wolverine.
Which leaves hard-core tech/ship junkies as our most likely newbies, i guess.
I'm hoping the new Stargate thing will be a huge hit but I kinda doubt it and skiffy is moving further away from new good stuff and closer to calling wresteling sci-fi.
Posted by Josh (Member # 1884) on :
There's more TOS actors dying as of late then there are new things to discuss.
Maybe we should start a bet pool.
Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :
Not that think it will cause a huge explosion in chatter, but I think the forum needs a little bit of re-formatting. For starters that 'Enterprise' board for example is long past due for archiving or merging with 'General Trek'. Perhaps a new board in it's place for any "New Trek" that comes with the new J.J. Abrams reboot might be worth considering too.
Posted by Dat (Member # 302) on :
And then we'll have newbies saying the Enterprise is cool and that the original is so outdated and ugly.
Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :
Shik has joined the MILITARY!?! What the hell!?!
I'm gathering they don't care what happened to him in the past?
Daniel is...
I feel bad sometimes - I mean i've been 'chatting' to you guys now for like 12 years and I hardly know what any of you look like or your real names. I suppose we just 'get down to business' here and don't really have a whole heap of 'social' forums that clutter a lot of other forums down.
Maybe we could start a social thread... where we reveal secrets to each other and braid each other's hair?
Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :
Look we all know the Defiant is 170m*
Nothing wrong with joining the military ... as long as it's the Navy.
Sometimes this place can seem intimidating to new members, especially considering many people here have been on the board since 1999.
*Actual size may vary
Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with joining the Military AT ALL! Just - that was quite unexpected! Are you still sailing around Hobbes?
Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :
Oh. Hey. Yeah. I didn't join up. Went and had a look-see, talked to some people who'd been in for a few years, decided I didn't like it. I *really* thought I'd mentioned that, honestly. Oops.
It has been slow lately. I haven't felt moved to post anything much, except on the BSG threads. And that's over now.
Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :
Perhaps someone should start a Flare Facebook group. With approval-only membership.
Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :
What, the forum isn't good enough for you?
Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

Granted we still have "Caprica" and "The Plan".
Anyone else here listen the phenomenal soundtracks to BSG by Bear McCreary?
Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :
Yeah, but mostly "All Along the Watchtower" and "Dei Kobol."

A Flare Facebook Group sounds interesting. And, who knows, membership/activity might pick up a bit in May.

I've always said that. I said that before Enterprise even started!
Posted by Omega (Member # 91) on :
The BSG season soundtracks are indeed awesome. And a Facebook group would be great.
Posted by Malnurtured Snay (Member # 411) on :
Shik joined the military? When did this happen?
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
On April Fool's Day, of course.
Posted by Andru (Member # 2145) on :
Well I'm a new member, but until now never paid much attention to the 'community' section, is anything interesting ever happening over here?
Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :
Yeah... that link is broken. Here is the correct link.
And I've invited those of y'all I have on Facebook to the newly created Flare Facebook group.
Posted by Malnurtured Snay (Member # 411) on :
You didn't invite me, but I joined anyway.
Well, you might've ... I tend to ignore my notifications.

Posted by Fabrux (Member # 71) on :
You wouldn't've been able to join if I hadn't invitted y'all.
And I can't seem to find an alternative to Frappr. The other messageboard I frequent that has a member map its an addon to VBulletain.
Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :
Facebook? No. I spend enough time online without going into all those social networking sites. My wife refuses to join them mostly because her students are on there.
Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :
I don't really want to add myself to that Frappr thing - I think I went to LAST time and didn't bother either.
I'll look into this facebook group... although I don't like how they do groups on facebook - they are too easily forgotten about.
Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :
No. No Facebook. Read the EULA sometime, man, it's awful
Posted by Ritten (Member # 417) on :
We could always use smoke signals.
Does Flare need CPR?
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
I dont know about CPR but we're quickly moving from "forums" to "enclave" status.
Posted by Ritten (Member # 417) on :
I could deal with dark hooded robes, little 3D starships in gold and silver embossed on them.
Maybe have them designed to look like the TNG uniforms.
We could always start a major PPC campaign.

Hah, well the Army has been taking me away from Flare lately but I'm still here lurking around. I have limited computer access but i just graduated from Ranger so I'll be fine
I'll try to drop by more often.
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
DAMN! A Ranger no less! Congrats, man!
er....if anyone asks what a Ranger does, tell 'em (deadpan) you use a bow.

Or "I save Hobbits"
Posted by shikaru808 (Member # 2080) on :
Most definitely. I'll post a picture when I can though.
New members should definitely open up and start posting. The initial pain and elitist attitudes will pass in time

Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :
Cool! My wife's cousin is a Ranger, and I think he's back in Afghanistan now. He reenlisted late last year and actually got sworn in by Pres. Bush while over there. I've got a few pictures at the end of this post on my blog.
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
Shikaru, you should change your handle to Stalker.
Hey, did you get a crazy beret? That's the best thing about Rangers- I always assume there's a gun under there....
Posted by shikaru808 (Member # 2080) on :
Yeah you get to wear a tan one as opposed to the regular black one that everyone else in the Army wears.
It's a good job I'm sure I'm the biggest nerd in the Regiment though.

I thought Saltah'na was a woman for the longest time. The name just looks feminine to me.

Hi everyone I'm new here and I'm a huge scfi fan
Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :
Hi. Here's your newcomer's chip. If you can stay off sci-fi for a month we'll throw you a party. Now you need to find a sponsor and remember to read the twelve steps pamphlet.
