That reminds of a map of the U.S. from the film Wild, Wild, Wild West which the main villain drew. It was something stupid with New England being given back to the British, the French reclaiming the Louisiana Purchase (cause they wanted it so bad in the first place), the Southwest going back to Spain (not Mexico), and those treacherous Canadians receiving Washington state and Oregon. So are there rednecks in Middle Earth?

Indeed. It was said that originally Dixielanders were without any language of their own, and they developed their Mullet tongue out of elements taken from other languages, though debasing and coarsening them in the process ("Hoosegow! Hoosegow! Guano! Nazg! Heehee...Dip!). As they spread across the South, they became divided into separate tribes, each with its own Hick dialect. This meant that yokels from different clans were often unable to communicate in their own language, and in these situations the Black Speech (Palaver) was often employed instead.

Here in Florduh, you can still shoot and kill an unarmed 17 year old if he's black and call it self defense.

No offense to you Jason, but something is seriously wrong with Florida.

No offence taken- I also think there's something deeply wrong in this state.
Possibly the root is the outright corruption of lobbiests (this one from the NRA) writing the very laws that get Floridians killed.
The NRA has also passed leglislation making it legal to bring liscenced firearms anywhere except airports and hospitals- you can not only bring a gun to the state capitol, but the law expresly forbids capitol security from stopping someone and asking for their permit.
And of course, the NRA wrote (and their cronies in the leglislature and governor's office passed) a law that forbids doctors from talking about gun safety with their patients- upon forfiture of their liscence and jail time- for even asking if the patient (or a child's parents) have a gun. Even if it's to ensure a child's safety in a state with many child firearm fatalities each year. That one's going all the way to the Supreme Court- three guesses how that's going to go with the court's current makeup?
But the NRA is only as powerful as the money they can spend- and that money comes from the gun manufacturers.
Of course, the NRA is hardly the only people pulling the strings of leglislaters- the anti-abortion nuts, exotic reptile importers, cell phone companies, private prisons, Big Sugar and of course, Florida Power and Light.
Any time a senator or congressman proposes leglislation, you can look at his doners and find someone that has paid for it.
Perfectly legal- and it's a nationwide phenomenon...but here, anyone can murder anyone else as long as there's no direct witnesses- as long as they say they were in fear for their life, lethal force is now a right.
Police must now prove a person was not afraid at the time to even arrest them- and how do you prove that? You cant.
Stand your Ground leglislation is being prepared in several other states- Texas, Colorado, Utah- the usual far right leglislative strongholds.
And that boys and girls is the way it is.

Very illuminating. To drag this thread kicking and screaming, pissing and shitting back on topic, if Mordor is Florida (and Barad-dur Orlando?), would that make the Shire Washington, and Minas Tirith Dallas?

Nice. Very ingeneous. Makes the features of the country a little more understandible for someone who 1. hasn't visited, 2. has stared at LotR maps for a large part of their life. Could do one for Australia, but most of it is desert.

That was alleged- the slain boy's friends say that the two had been going at each other for a year. Either way, it's laughable to say the kid's safety was at stakeafter he stabbed the guy five or six times- much less the dozen times he stabbed him.
That's not self defense- it's manslaughter.
And for the record, I'd think the Shire would bePortland Oregon- it took them six months to walk from the Shire to Mordor, as I recall (slight delays and river traveling notwithstanding
Great map BTW- I might print that onto canvas for shits- roll it up and put it on a bookshelf.

Alice Springs is the Thunderdome.
Remember that story I linked a few days ago? Well it blew the fuck up! Turns out "Mr. Neighborhood Watch" has a history of harassing residents- even following them up to their doorway! He also called 911 forty six times this year alone to report "suspicious activity".
Now the family of the victim has hired a lawyer and he got the incident's 911 tapes released...and they're horiffic. You can hear the kid crying for help right between a bunch of houses- and people were too afraid to go out there.
But several people called the police- in fear of that dick with the gun.
Still...no plans to charge anyone- FloriDuh law says that unless they can disprove the shooter's self-defense claim, they cant so much as take the murder weapon from him. quote: CNN) -- Terrified neighbors implored dispatchers to send police as a voice in the background screamed for help in 911 recordings released after the shooting of an unarmed Florida teen.
Trayvon Martin, 17, was returning from the store to the Sanford home of his father's fiancee when he was shot last month.
Authorities released seven 911 calls Friday, all of which describe hearing a gunshot.
The teen's parents broke down when they heard the recordings detailing the last moments of his life, said their attorney, Benjamin Crump.
Martin's last seconds were in fear
Martin family: Trayvon was a normal kid
Trayvon Martin family: We want justice
Race issue in Trayvon Martin shooting? "They are completely devastated, and they are in unbelievable grief," Crump told CNN affiliate WKMG.
Martin was carrying a drink and candy when George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain, called 911 to report a suspicious man, authorities said.
The 911 dispatcher told Zimmerman not to confront him. But by the time police arrived, Martin lay dead with a gunshot wound in the chest, according to Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee.
911 tapes released Friday detail moments of terror in the neighborhood as residents made a flurry of calls describing a gunshot and a teen wailing for help.
In some of the recordings, a voice screams "Help, help!" in the background.
"There were gunshots right outside my house. There's someone screaming, I just heard a guy shot," a neighbor says. "Hurry up, they are right outside my house."
Recordings mirrored the same details: A man outside was crying for help, followed by the sound of a gunshot.
"Hurry please ... there's someone screaming outside," a neighbor whispers. "There's a gunshot, hurry up ... there's someone screaming. I just heard a gunshot."
In another call, a woman begs the dispatchers to send help, saying someone is "screaming and hollering" for help.
Moments later, she describes a light at the scene of the shooting.
"Oh my God ..." she said, "There's still somebody out there walking with a flashlight."
Zimmerman told police he shot the teen in self defense, authorities said, and remains free as the state attorney investigates. Police said he has not been charged because there are no grounds to disprove his story of what happened.
"The evidence and testimony we have so far does not establish that Mr. Zimmerman did not act in self-defense," the police chief said. "We don't have anything to dispute his claim of self-defense, at this point, with the evidence and testimony that we have."
Police released the tapes the same day the teen's relatives said the they are outraged that Zimmerman remains free.
"It's surprising. It's shocking," said Tracy Martin, the victim's father. "It lets me know that justice is just not being served here. All we want is justice for our son. We're not asking for anything out of the ordinary."
CNN has made numerous attempts to contact Zimmerman, but have been unsuccessful. It is unclear whether he has retained an attorney.
Some have accused Zimmerman, who is Hispanic, of profiling the black teen.
His father delivered a statement to the Orlando Sentinel this week saying his son moved out of his home after receiving death threats. George Zimmerman is Hispanic and grew up in a multiracial family, the statement says.
Un-fucking-believable. It gets worse. quote: Licensed to carry a firearm and a student of criminal justice, Zimmerman went door-to-door asking residents to be on the lookout, specifically referring to young black men who appeared to be outsiders, and warned that some were caught lurking, neighbors said.
quote: “Hey, we’ve had some break-ins in my neighborhood, and there’s a real suspicious guy at Retreat View Circle. This guy looks like he’s up to no good,” Zimmerman told a dispatcher on Feb. 26, the night of Trayvon’s death. According to 911 recordings released late Friday by Sanford police, Zimmerman said the person was walking slowly, looked drugged and appeared to be looking at people’s houses. Police would later learn that Trayvon had gone to 7-Eleven during the NBA All Star game halftime to get Skittles and Arizona iced tea. “These a--holes always get away,” Zimmerman complained.
So this wanna-be-cop shot an unarmed 17 year old kid walking home with a bag of skittles for his kid brother.
THIS...this is the very worst- quote: “We are taking a beating over this,” said (Police CHief) Lee, who defends the investigation. “This is all very unsettling. I’m sure if George Zimmerman had the opportunity to relive Sunday, Feb. 26, he’d probably do things differently. I’m sure Trayvon would, too.”
"I’m sure Trayvon would, too"?!?!? What the fuck is that?!? Travon would what exactly? Stay home for fear of some nut with a gun pulling up in his car and killing him?
It really shows where the police are on this- and it's not on the side of either truth or justice.
Travon's dad should just find this guy alone and shoot him right in the face- and then use the exact same law shielding his son's murderer to walk away scott free. [ March 17, 2012, 09:23 PM: Message edited by: Jason Abbadon ]

I read three stories about unimaginable grief yesterday, one of them about a slave woman in Mauritania whose "owner" threw her infant daughter out into the desert while the mother was out doing chores, where the baby died from ants and sunlight, because the owner thought the baby (whom he had given her during one of the rapes) was distracting her from her real job, tending to his and his familys' every need.
So I didn't finish this one, caught a blurb about it on CNN, had my fill of it. If there's more development and perhaps something is even done about this case, that would be great, and would merit an entire thread of its own.

Well look on the bright side, they wouldn't be playing using a ball but with pikes and axes. The field goal can be scored through with anything that comes off the opponents during play. And in the finals against the Kansas Dunlendings, you get to join in, if you are of sound body and can lift the sword belonging to your father and his fathers before him. Also, Rihanna will sing the "Lay of Luthien" before playoff. Bring a chair.

Yes, Mauritania is called the last bastion of slavery (at least openly practiced and accepted slavery anyway).
It's stories like that...sometimes I really wonder if establishing a far-flung Empire is not the only way to drag humanity up a few notches- look at India- the British were occasionally ruthless, but their influence is undeniable- world leaders speak of intervention here or there for "humanitarian reasons" while places like Mauritania remain stuck in the 1400's.
Might it not be better to topple as many oppressive systems as possible for a generation or three before cutting them loose to manage their own affairs?
Sometimes I think a world government like that is inevitible as a way forward- after all, in very short time (overall) humanity has fought several brutal industrialized wars- generally resulting in more democratic systems and an interconnected world community.
Sorta the end of Lord of the Rings- massive war leading to a period of rebuilding and peace.
Or is it just a lull betwen wars? Would the Tolkien world (eventually) degenerate into warring nations as human nature discards lessons of the past?

Another "Stand Your Ground" travesty. - quote: The incident took place on Jan. 25, when Roteta and another youth were behind Garcia’s apartment at 201 SW 18th Ct. According to police, Roteta was stealing Garcia’s truck radio. Garcia, alerted by a roommate, grabbed a large knife and ran downstairs. He chased Roteta, then stabbed him in a confrontation that lasted less than a minute, according to court documents. The stabbing was caught on video. Roteta was carrying a bag filled with three stolen radios, but no weapon other than a pocketknife, which was unopened in his pocket and which police said he never brandished. After initially denying involvement in the man’s death, Garcia admitted to homicide detectives that he attacked Roteta even though “he actually never saw a weapon.” Garcia claimed Roteta made a move that he interpreted as a move to stab him — so he struck first. Prosecutors and police have argued since the Stand Your Ground law passed that it would give vigilantes free rein to strike first and ask questions later.
quote: Miami police Sgt. Ervens Ford, who supervised the Garcia case, was floored when told Wednesday of the judge’s decision. Ford called the law and the decision by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Beth Bloom a “travesty of justice.” “How can it be Stand Your Ground?” said Ford, a longtime homicide investigator who on his off-day on Monday plans to attend a rally in the Trayvon case in Sanford with his two teenage sons. “It’s on [surveillance] video! You can see him stabbing the victim . . .”
In Florida, if some unarmed car thief steals your car and you chase them down and stab them to death, then lie about it to police and then change your story to "gosh, I thought he had a knife"...why, that's "self defense", dontcha know? Not only did he "stand his ground", he ran over a block to kill the guy- bonus points!
Pretty awful if police officers are marching in rallies over it.
Small wonder the NRA's lobbiest wrote the law how she did- a lot of people are buying guns right about now! If any ass can kill you and walk, we better all be armed- since the law is now toothless.

In the immortal words of Tom the cat (from Tom & Jerry) DONT... YOU... BELIEVE... IT!
Honestly, such violence is not common- it's just that no one is held responsible for it when it does happen. I've never heard of any shootings at Disney World...but then, their security could take care of any evidence. All retired special forces guys- it's scary.
Those guys in the big character costumes? Built in P90s in each arm of that kevlar and ceremic armored suit.
Think on that when you ask one for a photograph with your kid. Something Awful nails it. [ March 22, 2012, 11:57 PM: Message edited by: Jason Abbadon ]
