OK. I was fucking about on the Elections Canada website in another window, and I clicked a link for our amusing friends at the Christian Heritage Party, and they opened in this window, wiping my beautiful post! Bastards!
Anyway, and this is the brief version:
I opened this gone-but-not-forgotten post by amusingly questioning how badly Tahna needed to procrastinate that he was digging through archived news from the Communisty Party of Canada, and cheerfully conceding I needed to procrastinate almost as badly. Or perhaps it wasn't amusing.
I pointed out that Bill C-2 passed some time ago, and that it merely sets Elections Canada's rules for Political Parties so that "eligible" parties only become formally "registered" if they are running 50 candidates in an election.
I noted with a bit of a virtual smirk at how Canada has two microscopic Communist Parties who hate each other as much as they hate their mutual capitalist oppressors. Neither are as much fun as the Natural Law Party or the Marijuana Party or the aforementioned CHP. In any case, in the last election both managed to dig up 50 candidates and so since that article's been written been promoted to "registered party." Alas, the CHP couldn't find 50. Canada was ever so much the poorer that they had to run as Independents.
In any case, registered party status doesn't mean dick, really. It wasn't like these people couldn't run for office or that if more than 12 got elected they couldn't get Parliamentary recognition as a caucus.

No, I heard of this from the CBC and decided to look it up. Worthwhile subject of course. The Communist Party doesn't seem to have any objection to anything else other than the 50-candidate rule. Not that I support them or anything. Another thing is that some prominent RIGHT-WING politicians (thats right) actually support what the CPC is attempting to do.

Funny you should pop in, but as far as weird Canadian political shit that the CBC covered tonight, this campaign is just haunting. There's a whole assload of those quote unquote hip government-sponsored ads coming to a Canadian TV near you (or not so near you) telling us to sell our souls to that great and wonderful near-rectangle formerly of the Pym. Where the guys are cute, and the Canadian stereotypes run free, and, "heck," there are even movie stars.

I will move back so fast that it will seem like I didn't at all!
I swear to God, that the TV ad is the scariest thing I've ever seen.
Though, Francis Ford Coppolla and George Lucas once passed through Moose Jaw's train station in a rented train they had used for their cross-country trip.

Though, while jauntily strolling through downtown Moose Jaw at one point, there were people, and they may have been Canadian Movie Stars, like that woman from Wind at My Back or perhaps that other woman from Wind at My Back, who were, quite literally standing on a soap box, extolling the virtues and singing the praises of Mac the Moose and the grand old Province of Saskatchewan. Buzzcomments like "There's a lot of tomorrow in this province" were strewn about.
Being the witter that I am, I quietly mumbled "horeshit." Some elderly farmer looked at me and said "That too! Manure is the future, son!" And promptly began to drink down his moonshine.
But: this has nothing to do with Communists in Canada, as there probably weren't any in Moose Jaw, except for maybe the comic book store owner, because he smoked a lot of pot, wore Rock T-Shirts and lived in a basement.

Tom, the topic I mentioned was featured in a talk show yesterday. The hosts talked to the lawyer handling the appeal for the CPC. As far as I know, this is an ongoing case and has now been presented to the Supreme Court of Canada. It's not old news at this moment. The CPC has been fighting such provisions in Bill C2 for a long time now.
