Hypothetical Questions. Let's see if you can answer it with a straight face (though I won't be able to see it). And no "The Republicans never did it, the Democrats did" lines. This is to see how Republicans would feel if they were in the same hot potatoes that the Dems were in over the last few years.
1) If the Republican President was involved with an affair, and the Democrats asked for impeachment proceedings, would the Republicans try to defend their President, on the chance that they would still be able to run the country?
2) If the election actually had Gore ahead of Bush, yet in one state, the margin of victory for Gore is so small and Republican supporters were clamouring for a recount because they accidently voted for Ralph Nader instead of Bush, would the rest of the Republicans care?
The point is that cries of Democrats being sore losers may be quite overblown. I don't know about you, but I could see Republicans complaining about these same things if they were in the same problems the Democrats were in.
Not to say that I want Gore to win the election. Frankly, I am so sick and tired of this Election Crap that I really don't care who wins.

If there was substantial evidence, I would like to think that the Republican President would step down on his own. However, 'having an affair' is not illegal. Lying to everyone that you didn't, and its proven that you did, is illegal.

Bush would concede after the state mandated recount, if it indeed showed Gore ahead. I cite two examples- Richard Nixon, and that Governor race in Missouri. The Republican candidate conceded, DESPITE there was substantial evidence that there was voter fraud. He conceded out of honor to his oppenent(who happened to be dead).

Bill Clinton committed perjury. Crime. He was not punished.
George Bush commited a misdemeanor. Crime. He voluntarily paid the penalty in full.
Very little similarity.

I actually hope Gore does concede and let Bush ruin the country, oops, I mean run, damn typos.
No, I really believe neither would/will make a good President. Gore has seen Clinton get away with somethings, as of now, and may think he can too. Bush is not like his father, whom I voted for, I can't put my finger on it, but this Bush bothers me.
Let's hope the 04 election brings better.....

I voted on my mortar carrier, in the middle of the woods. My section sgt tried taking my right to vote away, but the platoon sgt wouldn't let him.

Look, the point is, if Bush suddenly found himself in the same position as Clinton, and also lied about it, would the fellow Republicans crucify him, or try to back him up in hopes of clinging to power?
All this is messy politics. And I would not be surprised if Bush got into an affair and lied about it under oath, the Republicans would divert all resources into protecting their president.
And don't tell me that "Bush never did, Clinton did". What if Clinton was Republican instead of Democrat?

Any candidate that runs for office is *SO* moderate (in order to appeal to such a wide base), that all this argument about Democrat/Republican is wasted breath ...
Its once they get into office that the distinction really comes through.
I think its pretty obvious that both parties will cover up their own mistakes, and blast the other for the same.

The answer to question one is "Ask Richard Nixon."
The answer to question two is "probably _A_ recount (not.. what is it, THREE now?), and probably not massive legal 'sidestepping.' And of course, the Republicans wouldn't have the media, OR screaming Jesse Jacksons, to back them up.
