Tonight at my college there was an open forum and then a candlelight vigil for the Littleton High School students. I worked very hard with a few friends to pull this together, and it was HIGHLY publicized. There was NO possible way that the other students on campus could have NOT known this was going on.

Want to know how many people showed up?

That's including me and the other girl from the committee.

*sighs* ... Now I realize that It's the last week of classes, but if people CARED, they could have at least stopped by for a LITTLE WHILE...

*sighs* ... I'm dissappointed, and slightly pissed off. I expected more of these students. But it seems that the deaths of people far away don't matter to them. And it should. IT SHOULD MATTER. It's when we stop caring about how precious human life is, that we start killing it off needlessly.

*growls* ...

Jubes, if it's any consolation, I can sympathize with you on both accounts.

First of all, I know what it's like to be the only one to care about this. I just get all bewondered and sorrowful at the very mention of Littleton. It's an eery sensation. Others just shun it off and walk away. It's heart-stomping. And hard to deal with.

Secondly, I once had a hand in organizing a community event to which less than thirty people showed up. There were about a quarter from the group that put it together; another quarter were friends of someone we got to speak. A few scattered few just happened to walk in the door...

Suffice it to say, I can certainly understand what you mean...

I can't remember if I posted this before...

UCLA did a survey on college apathy a few years back.

They sent out 1000 surveys to students on campus, asking it college apathy was a serious problem.

3% said yes.
97% didn't bother to reply.

Speaking from my own experience, it's not that nobody cares. Outside of classes and my own interests, I don't get involved in much of anything, not because I don't care or aren't concerned, but simply because I have neither the time nor the inclination to get involved in a lot of outside activities. Although Jubilee is right, dropping by for a while in the evening wouldn't have destroyed anyone's schedule.

I never participated in anything that wasn't going to actually ACCOMPLISH something. Which, when I went to college, was almost everything.
An open forum was a good idea. Even just a bunch of people sitting around talking is better than doing nothing.. at least there's some communication and thinking going on there. People should have gone to that. _I_ would have.
As for the vigil, well, you all know my thoughts in that area.

But even so, it's a nice idea.

I don't get sorrowful about Littleton as much as I get ANGRY. It becomes obvious that the warning signs were there, and adequate measures were NOT taken against these people. When somebody starts threatening lives, even only verbally or on a website, it should be taken as seriously as if the person actually pulled a weapon and were about to use it. And in my opinion, they should be dealt with in exactly the same manner. Get them before they get anybody else. No "I was only kidding" crap. This is NOT the time to be gentle.
This was not done, or thirteen other people would still be breathing.
*notices he's preaching again, shuts up*

Or maybe college kids just didn't give a damn that HIGH SCHOOL kids got killed. If those poor souls had been from U of Wherever or Someplace State, I'd expect to see a greaer responce from people of the same age.

Locally, every high school has had some event, from a simple moment of silence to discussions to faculty meetings, etc etc.

I don't think that I can state my feelings without copying First of Two word for word. You know, e may disagree on a lot of things (Religion...religion) but we actually share more ideas than we disagree on.

Chimaera's hit this one right on, in my opinion. No one doesn't care. They may visibly or verbally not display any emotion or interest, but, in my experience, we all care about everything to at least a certain level.

On the other hand, I hate it when people put on a show.
When Diana died, people over here reacted WAY OTT. People where thrown out of pubs if tehy didn't like Diana, fights started over it.

It's strange. Sometimes an event can gripa country, othertimes it starts shocking,but quickly passes by.

A popular TV personality, Jill Dando was murdered yesterday. There are rumours that it was revenge for the bombing of Milosovich's TV propoganda output. People didn't exactly seem upset, but there was a huge sense of shock running up and down the country.
You can never predict how people will act...
