The adminstration is almost gonna get away with this policy... BUT, several students, and a NY senator is on our side...they appealed to Albany to end this sneaky plan.... SUNY Albany takes care of the rest of the SUNY schools... Our president, Greiner, claims he cares for the students....but after this, no one believes him any more.
Many things go on, and much of the students are apathetic, but sometimes enough interest is raised to cause change...
Last year, UB appointed 100 million dollars to fix up the houses on the south campus, where many students live, and other people as well. They would buy the houses, fix and repair, and then sell them at a profit. This in turn raises rent, taxes, etc. So the people who lived there before can't afford to live there any more. When wealthier people move in, prices of stuff in that area goes up, making it hard for the rest of the remaining people unable to live there too.... Its a process called Gentrification. Its starting to raise discontent with UB's policies.

When I went to Clarion University in Pennsylvania, they pulled similar tricks with us.
They sold 3 times as many parking permits as there were parking spaces on campus, despite the fact that it's NOT really a commuter school, and there's not enough space turnover to justify it. THEN they decided to build a rec center (to replace the current, underutilized because noone needs it rec center), in the MIDDLE of the biggest lot on campus, DURING the school year.
They also never salt the sidewalks before 10 AM in the winter.. despite the fact that classes start at 8, and that people doing student teaching are often up and about even before that. I knew a kid who slipped and fell on a patch of unsalted walkway and seriously injured his back. When he threateaned to sue, the University's response was "then you'll never graduate" which was enough to scare him quiet.

At our university, they're pulling something that students here call fraud......... massive tuition hikes and no form of student aid relief.
Ah, yes, the Mike Harris common sense revolution: sacrifice everything for the sake of the economic indicators.
Here in British Columbia, the provincial government instituted a freeze on tuition fees. Sounds great? Think again. They also froze the university's funding (as a Canadian university, University of British Columbia gets the vast majority of its money from the government), and then demanded the university accept even more students. But the university got around that with all sorts of "fees" they made the students pay, but claimed it wasn't actually tuition. It's funny how universities accept you because of your good grades, but then turn around and assume your an idiot, or just don't care.
