For those of you who don't already know, Scifi-Art went down on Monday. It was taken down by Communitech (their host) with no warning and no explanation. To the best of my knowledge, no one at SFA has been able to get in contact with anyone at Communitech to get answers.

The reason I post this here is that a message was posted on SFA about two weeks ago saying that Scifi-Art would "suffer a major setback between the 10th and 20th of Jan." I generally think the majority of the people here are a respectable lot, and I sincerely hope none of you are responsible for the cancelation of SFA. Of course, if any of you are, I suggest you confess so the group as a whole doesn't get the blame, as many at Scifi-Art have already assumed that SolarFlare was responsible. Of course, if this group is not responsible, they should send a message to SFA insuring them that that is the case. I obviously don't want to see an innocent group blamed for smething they did not do.

The SFA problems are probably due to excessive CGI or bandwidth use, actually.

Shadow, that was my first impression (its happened before, even though the shitheads at communitech advertise unlimited bandwidth), but the fact that someone posted that prophetic threat two weeks before is more than a little strange. I'm not quite ready to write that off as mere coincidence, and I can GUARANTEE that there are many at SFA who jumped to conclusions even without reading that threat. Understand that I am not accusing SolarFlare of anything, but I think you guys should be aware of the situation so you can deal with it and prepare for anyone coming your way.

FYI, SFA is back up on a temporary server, and they will soon have their own dedicated server (I believe Tachy acutally owns his own box), so SFA should be much more stable in the future.

Seanr: Could you post that message along with the IP and the email address that went along with it (assuming that SFA is up and running)? That way we could see who it could possibly be. Also perhaps you could tell us where the temp site for SFA is.

I doubt that any one of us here is responsible. We're just as surprised (and shocked) that this happened. One thing that I do know about: SFA's account was terminated due to various TOS (Terms Of Service) Violations. CC has been trying to get further information of what's been going on from Tach and MikeW. I haven't heard anything else from him recently.

BTW: Tachy's going to run his own server? How much would that thing cost him?

I didn't do it. I couldn't do it, and although if I could I might have been tempted to try due to my annoyance with the previous flamewar, in reality that feeling lasted for all of six seconds, and then my brain reaserted itself.

I talked to Tachy. The post appeared on the Millenium CGI forums. There was a thread with a link to that site on SFA, but that was after the last backup and before the crash, so the link is lost. If anyone knows the URL, I'd appreciate it if you could post it here since no one at SFA has it anymore.

*sighs*

No one here was involved, no one here ever WOULD be involved, and i'm insulted that you'd even think so. There are some people that believe that EVERYONE here at Flare hates everyone over at sci-fi art... and that's not true. I personally don't give a rats ass what you guys do, and i'm tired of this board always having to worry about what the sci-fi art board is up to.

Why don't we all just drop this stupid male ego trip thing and decide to ignore eachother completely? .. Why do we all have to be so immature about this? ... Hmm?
So we don't like eachother. So what? Was there anything written that said we had to? Was there anything written that said we had to hate eachother, either? No. There wasn't.

"Knock, Knock"
"Who's there?"
"Dead horse: STOP BEATING ME!"

I'm glad you've got your board up. Now go away and leave us alone. Thank you.

SFA is only one of about a dozen Communitech accounts that were TERMINATED with no warning earlier this week. Among others, a friend of mine was one of the victims. (I have access to the CT forums through a few friends - if you doubt me, I can easily produce a list of terminated domains) Not a single one of the account owners was notified first. This backs up the claims of myself and others that Communitech does not deserve ANY business. (I am a disgrunted ex-Communitech member myself)

I'd like to see the post by this idiot threatening SFA as well. He is probably the same one who tried to order the killing of u-p.net

BTW, someone asked how Tach could afford his own dedicated server... Both him and Pedro work for ISPs, they can easily get employee perks. (Something I hope to be able to do in the future... )

Sean, how exactly would someone pull off something like that? They would have to have access to communitech servers, and fairly high level access at that. As far as I know there is nobody at solarflare with that kind of power.

I also believe nobody here who would have the accounts of other communitech users deleted just so they can take a shot at scifi-art. If there wass, they would have issues with the Admins (and I am quite sure every user as well) and with the members of sci-fi art. They would not be welcome here or anywhere else for very long, you can be sure of that. Hell I'd be happy to hand the person in question over so you could rip them apart. So now you know how we feel

Tahna - Yes, Tachy told me he had his own server which would be coming online soon.

Daryus, its quite simple, really. All they have to do is tell communitech that SFA is doing something against the terms of service. I doubt SFA intentionally broke the TOS, but it wouldn't be that hard to find something. For example, they were running a chat applet on the server, something against the TOS of most ISPs. Regarding the other sites, I have no idea what sites those are (I don't know of any hosted by them other than SFA). If you could tell me where to find that list, I'd appreciate it.

I can't find Millennium CGI anywhere, so if someone has the URL PLEASE let us know.

That is why everyone's so pissed at Communitech, they didn't even BOTHER warning anyone...

A brief lookver of the CT support forums seems to show that SFA is the last of the killed domains NOT to be restored as of now....

The only way to obtain access to the CT support forums is to have an account there. I'm just borrowing the access info from a few friends of mine who were unfortunate enough to sign up for accounts. *L*

I spoke to MikeW last night over mail (to which I will be replying again later tonight, in case he's wondering)... We're both pretty convinced that whoever it is won't be bothering with coming back or trying anything else.

I know they didn't warn anyone, I was talking to Tach just after he found out. Anyhoo, he asked me to let people here know that many people from Sci-fi Art are contributing to the new server financially. If that cleans up the cost question.

The site is back up now, so I guess this is a non-issue. Anyway, why is Tachy not allowed access to this forum? He told me that he can't even view it, much less post to it (IP ban). I could see not letting him post, but preventing him from even reading the messages about him seems more than a bit lame to me.

Tachy and Mike Wright were temporarily banned because someone with a French IP was causing trouble with the forums. That probably wasn't Tachy, but we didn't want any trouble in any case.

seanr: Perhaps, but did it occur to you (or anyone else, for that matter) that during the current paranoid episode, Tachy may just be refraining from taking actions that would escalate hostilities to no-one's benefit? He is an adult, you know, and reputedly capable of intelligent thought.

I'd like to think that he's exercising good judgement, not that he's run out of options. The benefit of a doubt seems to be in order here.

Actually, I did ban a handful of IPs....

When I find people poking around the Flare control panel, I usually tend to NOT have a good reaction. I banned a number of IPs which were poking around the site, into things that they really shouldn't have. One of those was probably Tachy. It was an unintentional ban.

The reason for my removal of Tach's and Mike's posting privs... As I said to Mike in a mail, we really don't get along and every time they speak up here, a major indicent takes place. He seemed to be in agreement...

You misunderstand...firstly, the entire universe is set up so that I will never be any of the "powers that be." Secondly, there was still a small chance that it was Tachy, or someone acting on his behalf, since it was a French IP.

Frank, this is what it comes down to, Tach could have got in if he wanted to. The guy is a sysadmin at an ISP, he knows his way about. Even with bans there are ways, as you well know. However myself and others -I am sure- suggested that he shouldn't as to aviod a war. He agreed. Also you'll note there was something of an agreement between Mike and CC about keeping off each others backs. With that in mind I've got a suggestion, let sleeping dogs lie .
