OMFG! They just shot Pim Fortuyn, political leader of one of our oposition parties.... It's fucking unbelievable!!! This sort of awful shit hasn't happened in our country in a few hundred years! WTFF!?

HA.. nog meer Nederlanders hier
And BTW, that CNN report calls him 'far-right'... that's not entirely true. He himself doesn't (or 'didn't' ) seem to know which side he really was on. Yes, he called the Islam 'a backward culture', but he kind of tolerated that .... he's (or 'was' ) something of a tolerant right-wing extravagant guy...
And no, I do not agree with any of his and his parties opinions, but they did bring some life to Dutch politics, which is always good.

That one's better.

CNN makes me laugh when they label European parties roughly equivalent in terms of political spectrum location to the Republicans as "far right."

Pim Fortuyn? The guy should have been running for election on Coruscant, not Earth.

You know, you guys have some pretty f'ed up protesters...
Any leads on who whacked the guy?

The gunman has been arrested but that about covers what I know.
Motive is still unknown four hours after detainment... probably a lone whacko who wanted to make a political statement. He isn't volunteering a lot of information -- neither are the police for that matter -- so much remains speculation.
I'll post an update when I hear anything new / substantial.

Both of those articles refer to this Kok guy in the plural: "The only exceptions were Kok...".

Heee, Nederlanders
I'm down ever since I've heard the news (on TV). Although I'm a VVD voter, it really hit me hard. I was fighting against my tears the whole evening.
Nevertheless, I agreed with his criticism against our government. The only reason I was not planning to vote for him were his over-simplistic solutions. And I agree with the commentaries that the media and our left-wing parties created an environment in which something such could have happened. Particularly Melkert and Rosenmuller.

The pies not only contained urine, but also puke and horse shit.

And that was probably their 'big gun' as far as debating tactics go.
Throwing shit? MONKEYS throw shit.
What goes through these people's minds? "You gonna go to the debate tomorrow?" "Yeah! But I've nothing intelligent to contribute, so I'm gonna throw pukepisspoop pies!"

The day after is even stranger. It's really incredible what happened..
Assuming it's him, it will be interesting to hear his political motivation, and discover what end of the spectrum he supports.
I myself suspect we're seeing an alarming rise in left-wing violence. But I could be wrong.

You base this on what? That he's a college student?

From the letter he just sounds like some derranged nut.
Posted by Alpha Centauri (Member # 338) on :
Well, the guy probably *is* a left-winger. From what I've heard about this, he was against the Bush-government, which is right-wing after all. But I've heard also speculation that extreme-right might be behind these actions.
About the connection between Fortuyn and the 'eco-terrorist': Fortuyn was known to be sceptical about a variety of environmental issues. He said we wasn't worried about about pollution, global warming etc.

His rambling letter is reminiscent of some ultra-left-wingers I knew (present company not exactly included.) That's why I presupposed it.
It is also strongly reminiscent of some idiot anarchists I knew. Anarchy tends to be espoused as a workable system by people whose beliefs actually tend more towards leftism than rightism, almost as much as Communism is espoused by those same people, once they figure out what really happens in anarchy.

This coming from Mr. The Government Is Evil and must exercise no control over the individual?
There are two rather distinct brands of anarchism: The throwing rocks at Starbucks sort from Seattle, and the shooting police officers kind from Montana.
Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :
That duality seems to me to be a bit of a disservice to the philosophy of anarchism which is, I suspect, a bit more complex than that.

Besides, we all know that the good old American way to protest is to create very boring threads on the internet and then ignore people who have opposing viewpoints in said threads.

I love you. You're so funny.
I've never, EVER said that. I have never called government worse than a necessary evil (certain PEOPLE who govern, that's a different story.) Nor will I. Your extremist position naturally forces you to believe that because I take an opposing position, mine must necessarily be as extreme as yours.
If you want my opinion in a little sound-bite form, here you go:
"A little government, a little faith, and a little luck are all needed to survive. But only a fool puts all his trust in any of them."

Blah Blah Blah.
Liberal this, liberal that.
You hear that those people over there are blaming the Liberal Media for Fortyn's death?
Blah Blah Blah.
Posted by CaptainMike (Member # 709) on :
The liberal media? Yeah.. you know who else had a hand in this? The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians and the American Civil Liberties Union. I point the finger and say 'you helped this happen.'
Blah blah blah

Posted by Harry (Member # 265) on :
But... you know.. if I were an evil Eco Terrorist... I would've killed someone a bit more involved with bio-industry. Fortuyn wasn't even very interested in the environmental issues. His party was even working on some pro-environment things (I don't recall what).
Posted by First of Two (Member # 16) on :
Well, you can work on 'environmental things' all you want, but if you don't work on THEIR idea of what 'environmental things' you should be doing, you're still the enemy.
