Haroon Siddiqui is perhaps one of the most controversial opinion writers in the Toronto Star. Of course, his keyboard has seen quite a bit of action in the wake of 9/11. Here, he writes this article as a bit of a summary of all his "fan mail" that he has received. A link to all his articles is here.

"Why in hell can't trash like you go back to the country you came from?"

Oy. Please tell me this kind of prejudiced reaction does NOT reflect the general view of the American populace... I'm perturbed by Siddiqui's 50-50 balancing act.

Toronto Star does not equal American, get a map.

Did it occur to you the Star might have American readers?

I just looked at a map of North America, and Toronto is clearly labelled as part of it.

Is this one of those strange maps that puts America in the middle?

It COULD be the Canadian populace, you know. In which case we have to be VERY careful.....

Yes, Liam, the same one that has Hollywood as the Capitol.....

"Is this one of those strange maps that puts America in the middle?"

Well, yes, North America was more-or-less centered in the map. But, seeing as it was a map of North America, I'm not particularly surprised.

What is up w/ those world maps that center on 90°W or so, anyway? Who would want a map that splits the planet's largest landmass into two separate parts at opposite ends of the page?

Especially since it makes those evil pinko commie bastards a western nation. And it makes us an eastern country, although we do have an evil socialist government, so...

I think it's just someone taking "American-centric" to ridiculous extremems. I'm waiting for a proposal to move all the time zones so that Washington is the middle one.

And take it away from the centrally located Greenwich?

No, and double no!

Cory Doctorow has a novel coming out which is, apparently, among other things, about doing interesting things with time zones.

Surely an oxymoron?

Posted by Ritten (Member # 417) on :

...or, Cory has too many kinky thoughts.....

I think there's a Greenwich up in Massachusetts or somewhere around there, so that may not be a problem, actually.

East Greenwich is where the flea market i go to is! its next to Warwick and Coventry. Warwick is where my school is. The flea market in East Greenwich is right near the movie theatre in Warwick! We go to the movies Chicago-style! Coventry is where Jen lives! Not Jenn, but the other Jen! Then I go home through Scituate, where the McDonalds i used to work at is, and Glocester, where my parents used to live! Then I get to Burrillville! From Warwick I go to Foster or Burrillville through Johnston and Cranston and Smithfield! Or North Smithfield! Especially if i was in Providence or Pawtucket!

I'm in the same Time Zone as Washington! And Delaware!

We all know it's Greenwich, Connecticut, which is where Martha Stewart lives.

Everything falls into place now.

"We go to the movies Chicago-style!"

The movie is cooked in a deep pan?

Oh dear. I am indeed shamed. I should have remembered that, especially since it was on the front page for so long...
