Heh. I didn't know most of those questions off the top of my head, but I was certainly aware of them when my memory was refreshed. Though I *did* know the capital is Ottawa right off the bat.
Besides, isn't Canada just an unofficial, self-governing territorial annex of the United States?
(I'm kidding!)

Well, see, it only pays to be informed about IMPORTANT countries.
Canada has little of use to us, (besides the occasional entertainment personality, most of whom move here to become important) and if we really needed to, we could blow it up in short order. Hence, it's relative lack of importance.
I propose a trade: our left-wingers for what passes for the right-wingers in your country, a one-for-one exchange.

Without meaning to denigrate Canada in any way, is there any reason why Americans should be expected to know these things? I don't see any articles about how ignorant they are of the current administration in their other close neighbour, Mexico - and yet I gather Americans are more likely to go there than they are to Canada. . .
Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :
That would depend on the demographic, I think.
Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :
Probably. I know more Americans who've been to Mexico than I do who've been to Canada. Then again, it seems to me that while everyone else in the western world talks about which country they went to on their holidays, you guys talk about which hotel you stayed in in Las Vegas. 8)

Why do people act surprised when they learn Americans are not educated about the world? This is a very old habit of our people. Hell, we don't much about ourselves. There have been polls showing Americans didn't know which general fight in the Civil War or the names of cabinet members in the current administration. I think Americans are more happy not knowing than knowing.

A great deal of this would be due to the more insular educational system of the USA. But having said that, if you are the type of person who cares about these things, you'll find out.

Well, in all honesty, someone who takes a trip from New York to Las Vegas will have travelled farther than someone who takes a trip from London to pretty much anywhere in Europe.

Slight tangent: I recall hearing on CBC that US tourism to Canada has sky-rocketed in the last year, apparantly due to the fact that Americans no longer feel safe/welcome in many parts of the world. While I have no idea how it would compare to Mexico and the Carribean in terms of numbers, it still struck me as being slightly amusing Posted by CaptainMike (Member # 709) on :
my presence in Canada is bound to skyrocket once i find myself tired of living in a dictatorship.. i won't feel safe here.

I should bloody well hope so, too! During one of my politics lessons, it was decided the only countries everyone in the room liked were Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Ahh yes, South East Asia.
Our PM does have a little international debacle to take care of. But in all honesty, what he said was no different to what Bush said.
