Despite its obvious discriminatory nature, DADT did serve a useful purpose when it began: it was a compromise position that allowed the conservative bigots to pretend they were keeping gays out of the military while allowing them to serve. Was it a moral decision? Hell no. But it was a practical one at the time. And it outlived its usefulness. In the last 15-20 years, mainstream society has started to (slowly) move towards greater acceptance of non-heterosexual people.
I'm glad Congress got off their asses and passed the repeal. Hopefully the stuffed suits at the Pentagon will follow through; although I can't imagine why they wouldn't, because if nothing else, they'd get a way to stop losing good soldiers for stupid reasons, right?

*nods* Though i can imagine a increase in petty assaults amongst the junior redneck blue jackets (and what ever you call the E-3 & below in the other services). When i worked in Security on Ike, it oftenned dismayed me to have to hold muster on moderately Division-sized formations of sailors on restriction. Even more shocking was the very rare Chief or Officer in the formations. I suppose it could have been the fact that it was a carrier, after all... then again, where some fools describe a carrier-at-sea as a city, i agree.
assuming you could get the Bronx or Queens underway, that is...
I'll still bet that most kids will keep quiet about things, rather than put to any risk thier personal lifes are, otherwise.
LOL but i can also imagine some crazy fuckers who just wanna get out of the service by litterally pulling a Corperal Klinger or too, now that they get away with it...
*thanks foer the edit. It was tasteless but i dont think kindly of religions, of some faith nowadaze...

Time for "The Best Military in The World" to get with the program. Every dumbass editorial objecting to equality for gays in the military was already voiced and shot down back when it was black servicemen being integrated. Really, you can swap "gay" for "black" and the faulty reasoning is interchangable with objections from back then.
Of course, this also shows what a disonorable old bastard John McCain really is- either he was flat out lieing back in the campaign when he said he was for repealing DODT or he's so petty as to fight against equal rights just to spite President Obama.
Frankly, I dont know which is worse.

I am not inclined to think that either one of those things is untrue.
