Now, wait... When you say "pre-TNG", do you mean Trek or real-world? Bear in mind that, real-world, ST5 and ST6 overlap TNG. So, in other words, do you mean it's something that aired pre-1987, or something that took place pre-2364?

OK, alive, not humanoid, and from TOS or one of the first four movies. Or maybe TAS. And smaller than spacedock. That eliminates starship and anomaly. Non-humanoid life-form from that time period that isn't gigantically huge. Well, it's not that amoeba. Too big.

Question: Is it an energy being?

Horta and Companion are the only two that immediately come to mind. And then there's that cloud from "Obsession". 'Course, I don't know my TAS that well.

Hmmmm People are throwing in suggestions masquerading as thinking aloud in the hopes I shall let slip extra info. Naughty Naughty!

You ask if it is an "energy being" This is rather a vague description, so I shall attempt to be specific in my answer. The life-form I am thinking of is not a "field of energy" which bizarrely is alive. It is composed of matter.

It just hit me: V'ger was alive, in a sense. The probe itself would fit everything, too.

Question: was it from TOS? Meaning, did it appear in the show that aired from '66 to '69?

Question: is it natural?

It would if you only count the Voyager 6 probe itself. The rest of the cloud was it's ship, effectively. If you count the ship, it wouldn't fit inside the orbit of Jupiter.

The cloud disappeared when is came closer to Earth.
The cloud was 82 AU's in diameter (1 AU = the distance from Earth to the Sun). The ship itself was a whole lot smaller than that, but nonetheless about 100 kilometers long (Kirk ordered to 'skim' the surface at 500 meters for 100 kilometers, and it appeared that they went all the way through to the back of the ship).

Q19: Depends how big your backpack is, but I belive I would be correct in saying yes, you could stuff it in a suitably sized backpack. Why you would wish to is a question.

Q18: The life-form originates from TOS, yes.

The creature in question is a Denebian Slime Devil as mentioned in "The Trouble With Tribbles" and illustarted as a rather bizarre red crouching creature in Shane Johnston's "Worlds of the Federation"

Waitaminute... The Denebian slime devil line was in "Trials and Tribble-ations", also, meaning that they were mentioned in DS9. Also, since the picture came from a book, it's not canon, so there's no way to know if one could fit in a backpack.

I wish somebody would do one of these contests where the clues are actually valid... :-)
