Not the most original plot, to be sure. How many times have we run across the descendants of humans taken from Earth by aliens centuries ago?

I know the Beta Quadrant has gotten name-dropped a few times over the years, and that a lot of materials outside the shows/movies say that the Klingons, Romulans, and part of the Federation lay there, but I think this is the first time that being there has been a major plot point. And we're pretty deep into it, too.

I think my favorite line of the episode was when Pike described the spore drive, in that someone finally says in-universe what a silly idea it is.

Owosekun actually gets a little backstory, as well as something to do. Nifty. Detmer also gets a chance to shine.

Tilly continues to be adorable as she continues to try to find another way to use the spore drive without plugging Stamets into it. Sad that she'll probably be unsuccessful, since we don't see spore drives later on.

Speaking of, I assume from Stamets' reaction to the jump that he saw Culbert again.

Also, am I the only one to (thus far) find the whole Spock thing to be one of the least interesting parts of this season?

You’re not the only one who’s bemused by the Spock plot...

I was pretty surprised and pleased by how long they stretched out the “following the Prime Directive” aspect of the story. Every other captain from previous shows would’ve broken it within 10 minutes of beaming down. (Even Picard, though he’d probably talk about it longer.) [Wink] Even the resolution, with Pike revealing himself to Jacob, adhered to the spirit of the Prime Directive even if it stretched the letter of the law.

Detmers has become my second-favourite helmsperson. After Sulu, of course. It's good to see aomeone who's actually going, "I'm flying a starship, how fucking cool (sorry, Tilly, nicked your catchphrase) is this?!" None of the intervening pilots in the franchise - assorted TNG and DS9 people whether main characters or backgrounders, Paris, Mayweather - have been particularly interesting as characters when just BEING pilots. In fact, I wonder whether the stoner asshole pilot in The Orville has been an inadvertent influence on that?
