I am considering mentioning the great barrier in a starship design I hope to post on these forums soon, and the thought came upon me that I should probably ask around for information on this topic before I start going on about it. So how how about it? Can anybody provide me with some information on it? when it was first mentioned, some background (conjectural information will also work), etc.

Thanks.

The Great Barrier was first seen in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier when the Enterprise was taken over by Sybok in 2287 for his search for Sha Ka Ree.

The Galactic Barrier was first seen in 'Where No Man Has Gone Before' TOS when the Enterprise 2065, as a follow up mission for the SS Valiant earlier that year. The Barrier was crossed three times by the Enterprise, in 2265, in 2268 as seen in 'By Any Other Name' TOS, and in late 2268 or early 2269 seen in 'Is There in Truth No Beauty'. Some people are effected by the GB in the form of dramitically enhanced ESP and pyschokentic powers.

I confused the names of the two. What I had emant was the Galactic Barrier. The above request still stands, just substitute "Great" for "Galactic."

Thanks for the info and the correction.

I thought the galactic "core" had a barrier, as well as the outside, bottom and top. Wasn't that where Sybok and co went?
I also think, in reality, the galactic edges only thinned out into less and less planets and stars until you were into open space, finally unaffected by galactic revolution.

Yah. I don't recall ever hearing anything "real" about any kind of galactic barrier around the putside of the galaxy. I think it's just a matter of no more stars.

I'll check around, but I do believe that they either have thought or do think a galactic barrier exists. It is an area of radiation that surrounds the galaxy, not a cloud as ST has made it, but VFX are everything to us.

Just as a matter of interest, why would you want to mention the Great Barrier in a starship design?

Ritten hit the nail on the head here, well kind of. Lets just say for now that the ship was meant to go to the Galactic Barrier, but that isn't where it stops, or its first or last destination, either.

I've always heard that the Galactic Barrier was an impenetrable wall of force that strange effects on humanoids. I am only slightly familiar with the TOS episode that delt with the GB and the SS Valiant.
Anyhow, I've collected the bare minimum information I need now, perhpaps there isn't as much written about it as there should be. Thanks all for the help.

Obviously the wise man didn't consider that a man with everything to lose could be equally as dangerous.

If you are using books as a ref., there was a book about Q that covered a lot of the 'mysteries' about the Trek Universe, it was a good book, but since it isn't canon...
