Season 3 of ENT just started airing here, and so far, I'm not exceedingly impressed. Ok, to be fair, I haven't given it much of a chance, since I've only seen the first two episodes. But so far they've had the unspeakable 'Slutty T'pol', which is a whole other topic altogether.

But the thing that got to me was the brutality in these two episodes. The MACO's were bad enough, but they're at least credible, considering the nature of their mission. Not to mention the good storylines you could get between the violent and non-violent folks aboard the ship. But in 'Anomaly', Archer tortures someone? What the hell? And if that's not bad enough, all Reed does is half-whisper "Captain". No one tries to stop him, or even confronts him afterwards. Please, someone tell me it gets better. I don't wanna spend the rest of the season watching Archer prove how hard he is. [Eek!]

Well season 3 did show a darker side to Archer. He's not all that lovey-dovey as you've known him to be from season 1 and 2.

There are consequences to that, for sure. I didn't watch most of S3, but you definitely see him dealing with that in the first ep of S4 (since the vampire space nazis DID NOT HAPPEN).

Although it did perhaps go a bit too far, I rather liked that aspect of season three. One of the refreshing things about ENT was that there was the opportunity to show mankind at a time that wasn't quite so enlightened as Kirk's or Picard's. Plus, IMO, Star Trek *should* be about showing many different viewpoints, including uncomfortable or radical ones. (IDIC, yo!) After all, it isn't like Archer or his crew never questioned, debated, or were tormented by these decisions. And of course, the whole point of it was to get the AUDIENCE to think about these issues, which it obviously did.

Sure, I get it, I'd be pissed off too. The violence isn't what upset me. The fact that nobody objected to it is what bothered me.

I dunno. It just doesn't feel like Star Trek to me.

Star Trek is changing with the times. Or not. Which could be why its been cancelled... Who's going to watch the dren B&B pump out when there's better shows to watch like Battlestar Galactica and the Stargate shows? Eh? EH?!

I don't see what everyone's problem is with "fake swears." I mean, they get the point across and don't get censored. I doesn't make a goram difference. No ruttin way will the censors let any fraking swear words we use today on TV. But it would be pretty frelling drad if they did.

What if they're just swearing in another language? Your constant rant against it, for example, is 大象爆炸式的拉肚子.

Because they are clearly ridiculous. I mean, if you don't think they're ridiculous, that's fine. We all enjoy things that other people think are ridiculous.

Also: "No ruttin way will the censors let any fraking swear words we use today on TV." So, you've never seen Nip/Tuck or The Shield or a host of programs on Comedy Central?

Seriously, I can't imagine not being bugged by fake swears.

And yet, why does everyone assume that my first comment was a rant, exactly? Battlestar Galactica and Firefly are two of my favorite science fiction TV shows, and, I'd argue, two of the best ever. (Well, moreso for Firefly.) And they're thick with fake swears.

Actually, I don't watch any of those shows. But swearing on TV is a New Thing and each commercial break is ended by an annoying "viewer discretion is advised" warning. [Roll Eyes]

The ones I find most annoying are the ones where they just take "fuck" and alter it slightly. FS's "frell", B5's "frag", BG's "frack", etc. It's just a dumb work-around.

I'm not so bothered by "Firefly", though. They actually put some effort into their "fake" swears (some of the Chinese ones aren't even technically fake, really). We can actually believe that there's some sort of linguistic evolution going on there. Rather than having hardened characters in the middle of firefights sounding like a twelve-year-old who's afraid his mom might hear him.
