I am doing a media studies degree at Manchester University in England. I have chosen to undertake a study on the media representation of Star Trek fans. As a fan myself I do get annoyed when ever I hear or see any articles or representations of Star Trek fans as the typical 'trekkie' showing them to be extremist or 'nerdy'. Basically the 'trekkie' image that is shown through the popular media is that which is depicted on the Saturday Night Live sketch 'Get a life'. I would be very grateful if anyone reading this could fill in my questionnaire to aid my research, I apologise if anyone takes offence to any of the questions, they are not intended that way. Please make any additional comments on the subject, if any one would like to see my final study leave your E-Mail and I would be happy to send it to you. (If Anyone would prefer this by E-Mail please let me know)

My encyclopedia. 7.) Favorite ST Series: Tough one!! I can never get sick of the original series. so.. TOS with DS9 close second and Voyager third. 8.) Favorite Character: Data. I don't know why! Maybe cuz he's like a brilliant child experiencing everything for the first time, event tho' he has knowledge of everything. He epitomizes exploration to me. 9.) I would be most like B'Elanna Torres. I'm an engineer myself .. and a tinker.. But I don't really have her temper, but I do have her sense of perfection when it comes to my work. As a man however, I'd make an ugly B'Elanna Torres (she's just gorgeous!) 10.) No. I'm a fan .. not a fanatic 11.) Everything I know is public knowledge. Voyager

1. What term do you use to describe yourself as a Star Trek Fan?
C) A Star Trek fan
2. How long have you been a fan?
Roughly 6 years
3. How or why did you become a fan?
I had seen some movies and a few eps of The Next Generation about 1 or 2... then I borrowed out the Pilot episode of Deep Space Nine - and REALLY REALLY enjoyed it... I mentioned this to a friend - he and his brother both liked Trek!
Then my friend lent me a video of The Next Generation with Q Who? Best of Both Worlds parts 1 and 2 and the episode Family... I was hooked!
4. Do you purchase Star Trek merchandise?
yes
5. How much do you spend per year on Star Trek merchandise?
Because I buy the videos (being in Australia - and I have recently bought some model kits - being in Australia they are relatively expensive imports from the US plus I bought most of the Soundtracks to the movies this year I would have spent about...
About $500!!!!!!!! arrrrrgh. That is mainly cause of the videos - the channel that shows Star Trek in Australia treats it terribly and they are 3 years behind
6. What is your favourite piece of Star Trek Merchandise and why?
I eventually bought the rental copy of the Deep Space Nine pilot episode because I enjoyed it so much - they were selling it cheap - I guess this item - since it very well changed my life!
7. What is your favourite Star Trek series?
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - with TNG a close second.
8. Who is your favourite character, and why?
Major Kira Nerys... I think even though she plays a Bajoran Female - I think she is and has been the most engrossing three dimensional characters on Television in the last Seven years... why couldn't there be more? Kira is a ROLE MODEL - A HERO. Monica or Phoebe or Rachel from Friends aren't ROLE MODELS... Kira Nerys is a Role model, a hero for boy or girl, man or woman. At school they used to ask us - who is your hero... well I never had one... I guess Major Kira Nerys would be my hero...
9. Which character would you most like to be in Star Trek, and why?
Spock. Not because of the emotionless aspect or anything - he just has two friends that would do anything for him... Hey and that intelligence and superior strength wouldn't be bad... but being torn between his Human and Vulcan heritage - that would be difficult to deal with.
10. In the Saturday Night Live sketch 'Get a Life' the 'Trekkies' portrayed there collect information such as the combination to Kirk's safe. Do you believe that you possess any information like this? Maybe not as anal as that and bear in mind they were being facetious - but I think if you watch trek you begin to immerse yourself in a wonderful life - a beautiful future - what is wrong about trying to imitate something so good - there is no harm in it. Yes, though I do know some tidbit facts and figures. ;o)
11. If so what is your most unique piece of Star Trek trivia or information?
Off the top of my head? Well its more - I could name every episode of The Next Generation or Deep Space Nine in the first 10 seconds of seeing the episode... I guess. Its not that hard really... each episode is pretty unique.
12. Why do you collect this information? Well I see what you mean by the question - and my answer above didn't really fit the question - but I'll reiterate what I said earlier... Star Trek is such an inspiration to all who watch it - I think if you can in some small way integrate yourself with some part of the Star Trek universe - you can live - even for a split second - IN that universe... There is nothing wrong with wanting to live in a time or place as wonderful as of the Future that is Star Trek. Thanks to any replies.

What term do you use to describe yourself as a Star Trek Fan?
Trekkie
Trekker
A Star Trek fan (usually)
Other, (Please Specify)
"Treknologist" (when I'm in a "funny mood").
How long have you been a fan?
Since the middle of 1968.
How or why did you become a fan?
I was 10 years old, and Star Trek was quite a bit different from the rest of the science fiction on T.V. It didn't use rocketships to travel absurd distances (in absurdly short times). While it was not particularly scientifically accurate, it did seem to make an effort not to be blatantly absurd in its violations of known science (as a budding geek, this appealed to me -- they were concerned not to insult my intelligence; a rare quality in television programming).
Do you purchase Star Trek merchandise?
Occasionally
How much do you spend per year on Star Trek merchandise?
Between $20-$40.
What is your favourite piece of Star Trek Merchandise and why?
The Sketchbooks (I have the "First Contact" and "Original Series" books).
What is your favourite Star Trek series?
I like the original series for reasons of nostalgia and because it's a snapshot of the 1960's view of the future. I also like ST: The Next Generation, and ST: Deep Space Nine (the jury's out on ST: Voyager. I think Voyager is "fluff" but it's somewhat entertaining if nothing else is on).
Who is your favourite character, and why?
Lt. Barkley, from ST: The Next Generation. He's a fish out of water, yet he is very capable. Others do not appreciate his ability, and he does not have confidence in his abilities either. We're all like that at one time or other. The other characters can be maddenningly "perfect". Barkley, clay feet and all, is more like the rest of us. I don't know if he's appeared in more than two episodes, but I really liked the character when I saw him.
Which character would you most like to be in Star Trek, and why?
Me. Why? I don't think they're ready for me. It would be interesting, at least from my point-of-view.
In the Saturday Night Live sketch 'Get a Life' the 'Trekkies' portrayed there collect information such as the combination to Kirk's safe. Do you believe that you possess any information like this?
*L!* I liked that sketch! I do not have any information of that nature. It's too much work, and I'd rather fill in the blanks of Star Trek history on my own (trying to keep what I invent consistent with what I know of the Trek universe). The previous statement was a feeble plug for my Trek Website. There's a link to it at "Come Hither and Yawn..."
If so what is your most unique piece of Star Trek trivia or information?
The Horta was actually portrayed by an overripe side of beef named "Fred". (Just kidding, but my last answer makes all the rest "N/A", so I might as well have fun with them. )
Why do you collect this information?
It's less expensive and more interesting than philately, and the people you meet (both on-line and IRL) are rather interesting -- not always for Trek-related reasons.
Of course, your survey results will probably be somewhat skewed unless you post it at several different forums. Each forum is a community with its own unique character (and characters, for that matter). You might also want to give that survey to some Trek fans who aren't on line as well. (Just adding my 2¢.)

I don't wish to meet any of them. I like the characters in Babylon 5/Crusade and Earth: Final Conflict a hell of a lot better.
