In "The Dagger of the Mind", at 2:2:001.31, there is glimpsed a sign. The sign reads: "Personnel Director".

What is the role of a personnel director aboard a starship in the 2260's?

My answer is not too imaginative, but I'd guess it would be a bit like Troi's job, only minus the psychology. That is, we often saw her taking care of performance reviews, putting crew members where they would be most effective, etc. That sort of thing. And maybe it's the person who organizes the ship's bakeoff/sock hop too.

To try something more imaginative, perhaps "personnel director" is a machine that guides personnel in the correct directions aboard the ship, and some of this machine's functionings were behind the door that held that sign?

Remember the blinking lights on the corridors of the refitted Enterprise of ST:TMP and STII/III? They were obviously some sort of "visual paging devices" similar to those used in the real world before the invention of pocket beepers and cell phones. Perhaps the correct name for those devices was "personnel director"?

And to try something clearly nutty... maybe it was a typo for "Personal Dictator"!?! Maybe each crewmember could go into that room and get their very own Personal Dictator... the device connects directly to the brain and tells each person what to do and say

or...

maybe not
