The new edition (or update, at least) of the Encyclopedia will be out in about two months, and Amazon is already taking orders.

Hardcover
Paperback

Oddly enough, the cover says that there are 96 new pages, but Okuda said there would be 123.

Really? I always thought it was 96. That's what Margaret Clark said, I think.

Perhaps the extra twenty-odd pages are stuff Okuda added in the form of schematics, etc.? I know, i'm a hopeful.

Which raises an interesting question: price aside, is there any difference in content between the two? I'm almost certain to go for hardcover anyway, it's more durable.

Well, if you already have the non-trade version of it, that's in hardcover so why get another hardcover to protect an extra 100 pages alone? Unless the price isn't that different...

Since I don't think the two versions have different page layouts, there must be something on the extra pages of the hardcover version, even if it's only ship diagrams

Anyway, I have ordered the hardcover version.

I say we should all boycott the encyclopedia and demand that they sell a separate supplemental for everyone who has the encyclopeda-II and doesn't want to end up having two copies of the same thing...

That's all well and good, but they won't do it. Margaret Clark and John Ordover already said why, so usually that's a sign that it ain't gonna change.

A hardcover and a softcover? Or some hilarious mixup worthy of an ABC sitcom?

Two hardcovers, for the sitcom reason.

You could sell one on eBay.

Ooh...good idea. Everything on eBay is overpriced, so maybe I can get $200 for it or something.

I've been told the higher number of pages is correct. Apparently they managed to squeeze some more in just AFTER the news about 96 pages came out. Still, 120 or so pages would make a decent sized book. I'll probably buy it.

Oh yeah. I remember that. It's some stuff about that last episodes of DS9 they got to add.

I'm just buying the book to get a MSD of the Prometheus Class. Also, I wanted to see how much info about the captain's yacht will be there.

There will surely be MSDs of the new ships? Ooohhh...

It's a shame this will not include the Equinox. I want the encyclopedia. But what I really look forward to and want to see is a complete guide to starships. Including every starship known to date featuring multiview color diagrams and schematic information. Major starships would get like a page or two, and the minor ones like Cheyenne-class probably just a page. It would have to list every single ship of each class, but every has to be canon data from only TV and movies.

Of course a book like this might cost a lot, but I'd be willing to pay.

All I have it a copy of the first edition of the Star Trek Omnipedia, so I'll definitedly be getting a copy. The price ain't too bad either.

The folks at Pocket Books ARE negotiating for a contract for a Ships of Starfleet-type book.

What YOU need to do is go over there (to the Star Trek books section of www.simonandschuster.com ) and voice your strong desire to see such a project come to completion. You should do this at Margaret Clark's Q&A page, as she's generally the one in charge of Trek reference books.

Also, a book called "Starship Enterprise," which will apparently be about ALL the ships named Enterprise is in the works as we speak... though it may not be released for a year or so.

Well, just so you know, the Official Magazine has stated that they will be doing features on ALL Federation starships.

A useful and welcome stopgap measure, certainly. And the magazine can provide lovely pictures and hopefully interesting behind the scenes information about them. But for technical detail, we want a book!

It can help to keep things in perspective. But it's time for a new one, I think.
