This isn't about the Star Trek universe, but about Star Trek production.

I was wondering if anyone knows what type of education it takes to become a TV producer - along the lines of Brannon Braga, Ron Moore, or Jeri Taylor - so far as college major and study programs? I've been told 'mass communications' and 'jounralism,' but I was wondering if anyone here could confirm this or add to it.

Thanks for any assistance!

To work on Voyager, you apparently need at least a fourth-grade education.

Good question! I don't have the answer, but I suspect some here may know what kind of degrees so of the people have. I don't remember the guy's name, but he started out as an intern, and now has a story editor jod, or something of that nature, with Voyager.

Brannon Braga started as an intern (on TNG). That's possibly who you're thinking of. And Robertb J. Doherty (story editor, Voyager) was an intern during Voyager's fourth season.

There's no education requirement, so far as I know, so you just have to be able to write their show to be on that side of production, but to be a line producer or something... I have no clue.

Didn't Joe Menosky start out as an intern writer or something as well? I know Jeri Taylor had a smaller job and eventually went on to become an exec producer and creator.

This is by no means definitive, but here's a primer if you are trying to get a job in show business.

The most important part is, of course, the ability to communicate. Take lots of English courses. Mass comm. can't hurt. Speech, drama...etc.

Of course, the most important part, as has been pointed out, is to get your foot in the door. Pages, interns, what have you. Any chance for some hands on learning is invaluable.

Doherty was the one I was talking about.

I'm not sure about Joe Menosky (It's quite probable), but I'm almost certain Jeri Taylor started out as a co-executive producer to help Michael Piller run TNG.

What Sol says is true, too.
