Howdy all. I have $25 in gift certificatees for Coles, and I'm going to town tomorrow. Also, I have $10, and if I'm lucky I might get my allowance ($20). So, I'm gonna get some books. Any suggestions?

Out of those novels I only have Q-Squared. Great book. If anything, I could use some recommendations since that's the only Trek novel I read.

I personally would recommend anything by Peter David. Great author.


BTW - Hobbes: What does G.R.O.S.S. stand for? I have a C&H book that has G.R.O.S.S. in it, but my cousin has it.

Well my fav ST Book thus far is

"Battlelines" ST Voyager # 18 by Dave Galanter and Greg Brodeur.

Basicly Voyager is ambused and captured by the Edesians , a race in the Delta Quad that is engaged in a war with the Gimlon , they take Voyager and the crew hostage and force them to fight in the war against the gimlon .The Gimlon are basicly the Nazis of the Delta Quadrent and they are in a holy war with the Edesians and Voyager is forced to take sides.

This book is real cool id give it an 8 out 10

Another of my fav books is TNG : The Romulan Prize its a great insite into the Romulan Military system and it also features the D'K Class Warbird .

Most Books by Diane carey are ok , she writes alot of ST Voyager , she wrote "Equinox 1 , 2"

If i were you id cruise Amazon.com , run a search on Star Trek and Look around , thats what i do when i get some book cash , most of the Books i research there turn out to be good books

Look for Ds9 : "Betrayal"

and VOY "The Raven"

The ships of the fleet book on the non-canon Akyazi class has always looked cool to me. I think I saw it the other day at Barnes and Noble.

IIRC, Fabrux, G.R.O.S.S. is the name of Calvin & Hobbes' treehouse club. I can't remember what it stands for either though.

Egads! Not Voyager #18! Those are not my characters! "Ride 'n' hide"!??! Uhm, no. And they talk about weird things like "screens" for shields... It's not a good Voyager novel at all. Sci-fi, maybe; Trek, no.

Buy DS9 #4? 5? Fallen Heroes by Dafydd ab Hugh. It's really good, even though it's set on DS9 in the first season.

Or go with Mosaic by Jeri Taylor, for Voyager. Janeway's life history. Almost as good as Pathways, and that's saying a lot.

You have two of the Dominion War books. Are they the novelisation ones? I think so. The other two are also excellent novels, IMO.

The Long Night for DS9 (#14) is interesting.

The Captain's Table books are all relatively good, too.

The original Imzadi takes a bit of getting used to, but it's fun and a great read, tense... A good novel.

My favorite is Star Trek: Federation by the Reeves-Stevenses. This book takes place starts out tracing three different plotlines: In the 2260s, Zefram Cochrane is pursued by a madman who believes he can force Cochrane to build a warp bomb. In the 2360s, a passenger liner goes missing in the Gamma Canaris region, and an irate admiral wants to know why Kirk is receiving messages from a dead woman. In the 2460s, a Ferengi DaiMon on a Romulan ship wants to sell a Borg artifact to the Federation. These plotlines slowly intertwine until all three meet, however briefly.

IMHO, this book does a lot more justice to Cochrane than did First Contact. If you're willing to set aside canon for a moment, Federation is a thoroughly enjoyable read.

I'd recommend Star Trek: Spectre (which is in paperback). It gives an interesting insight into the mirror universe and is quite a good story. Dark Victory (which is in hardback) is a good follow up, but is rather slow.

And if you're looking for recommendations for non-Trek books, Babylon 5: Legions of Fire by Peter David and E:FC The Arrival by Fred Saberhagen are at the tops of my list.

The Seige - DS9 - the first book - was a great read...
actually Fallen Heroes was good if a little full on...

I've read Federation, and it's in the 2160s, 2260, and 2360s, not 2260s, 2360s, and 2460s.

Well, I went to town today. I bought a CD-RW, Descent: The Definitive Collection, Badlands books 1 and 2, and a Car and Driver 2000 calendar. Pretty good day, if I don't say so myself.

Fabrux: You're right. It was much too late and I originally wrote "22nd century", "23rd century", and "24th century", then forgot to change those numbers when I decided to go with the decades instead. I'm just glad my post turned out pretty coherent for 3 in the morning.

Is Vulcan's Heart the newer one, or Vulcan's Forge? Whatever it is, I read the older one, and I didn't like it. I don't know what particularly it was that I didn't like, but... Well, let's put it this way: Usually I read a Trek book in a week or so. I think that one took me about three weeks. Granted, I was reading another book at the same time, but it still wouldn't have taken me so long if it had struck me as any good. :-)

TSN: Vulcan's Heart came after Vulcan' Forge, so you read the latter. I also read Vulcan's Heart, since I borrowed it from Justin, and it only took me 2 days to finish the book. But then again, I was trained to speed read and whenever I read a Trek book, I get into it and can't keep it down.

Anything buy Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens: Federation, Memory Prime, Prime Directive.

Even some of the books they have ghost-written with William Shatner have traces of their writing style: The Return, Ashes of Eden, Avenger, Spectre

I agree with Xentrick. One thing that's often overlooked about the Shatner books is that, while they may be ghost-written, they employ very good ghost-writers.

Though I wonder if that terms even applies? Shatner has never made any great secret about his role in the process.

I think he comes up w/ the storyline. The Reeves-Stevenses write the actual words that go in the book. Though I might be wrong about this...
