1. What term do you use to describe yourself as a Star Trek Fan?
C) A Star Trek fan
2. How long have you been a fan?
Since 1994
3. How or why did you become a fan?
I got interested with pre-premiere information on Voyager, as well as with the TNG finale and the coming of the Defiant on DS9, which all occurred relatively close to one another
4. Do you purchase Star Trek merchandise?
Yes
5. How much do you spend per year on Star Trek merchandise?
Depends - I'd say between $50 and $100
6. What is your favourite piece of Star Trek Merchandise and why?
Encyclopedia b/c of the pictures, diagrams, and information, etc.
7. What is your favourite Star Trek series?
Voyager
8. Who is your favourite character, and why?
Captain Janeway - one tough broad!
9. Which character would you most like to be in Star Trek, and why?
Tom Paris - he has a past, he's got a great girlfriend, and he gets to work with Janeway and Seven of Nine
10. In the Saturday Night Live sketch 'Get a Life' the 'Trekkies' portrayed there collect information such as the combination to Kirk's safe. Do you believe that you possess any information like this?
Possibly - I do know trivia, but its usually general to a series, not a specific person
11. If so what is your most unique piece of Star Trek trivia or information?
The USS Voyager was originally going to be a Mercury-class vessel
12. Why do you collect this information?
Its neat to know (you can consider what might have been), and just plain fun.

1. What term do you use to describe yourself as a Star Trek Fan?
C) A Star Trek fan
2. How long have you been a fan?
Roughly 6 years
3. How or why did you become a fan?
I had seen some movies and a few eps of The Next Generation about 1 or 2... then I borrowed out the Pilot episode of Deep Space Nine - and REALLY REALLY enjoyed it... I mentioned this to a friend - he and his brother both liked Trek!
Then my friend lent me a video of The Next Generation with Q Who? Best of Both Worlds parts 1 and 2 and the episode Family... I was hooked!
4. Do you purchase Star Trek merchandise?
yes
5. How much do you spend per year on Star Trek merchandise?
Because I buy the videos (being in Australia - and I have recently bought some model kits - being in Australia they are relatively expensive imports from the US plus I bought most of the Soundtracks to the movies this year I would have spent about...
About $500!!!!!!!! arrrrrgh. That is mainly cause of the videos - the channel that shows Star Trek in Australia treats it terribly and they are 3 years behind
6. What is your favourite piece of Star Trek Merchandise and why?
I eventually bought the rental copy of the Deep Space Nine pilot episode because I enjoyed it so much - they were selling it cheap - I guess this item - since it very well changed my life!
7. What is your favourite Star Trek series?
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - with TNG a close second.
8. Who is your favourite character, and why?
Major Kira Nerys... I think even though she plays a Bajoran Female - I think she is and has been the most engrossing three dimensional characters on Television in the last Seven years... why couldn't there be more? Kira is a ROLE MODEL - A HERO. Monica or Phoebe or Rachel from Friends aren't ROLE MODELS... Kira Nerys is a Role model, a hero for boy or girl, man or woman. At school they used to ask us - who is your hero... well I never had one... I guess Major Kira Nerys would be my hero...
9. Which character would you most like to be in Star Trek, and why?
Spock. Not because of the emotionless aspect or anything - he just has two friends that would do anything for him... Hey and that intelligence and superior strength wouldn't be bad... but being torn between his Human and Vulcan heritage - that would be difficult to deal with.
10. In the Saturday Night Live sketch 'Get a Life' the 'Trekkies' portrayed there collect information such as the combination to Kirk's safe. Do you believe that you possess any information like this? Maybe not as anal as that and bear in mind they were being facetious - but I think if you watch trek you begin to immerse yourself in a wonderful life - a beautiful future - what is wrong about trying to imitate something so good - there is no harm in it. Yes, though I do know some tidbit facts and figures. ;o)
11. If so what is your most unique piece of Star Trek trivia or information?
Off the top of my head? Well its more - I could name every episode of The Next Generation or Deep Space Nine in the first 10 seconds of seeing the episode... I guess. Its not that hard really... each episode is pretty unique.
12. Why do you collect this information?
Well I see what you mean by the question - and my answer above didn't really fit the question - but I'll reiterate what I said earlier... Star Trek is such an inspiration to all who watch it - I think if you can in some small way integrate yourself with some part of the Star Trek universe - you can live - even for a split second - IN that universe... There is nothing wrong with wanting to live in a time or place as wonderful as of the Future that is Star Trek.
Thanks to any replies.

"Treknologist" (when I'm in a "funny mood").
Since the middle of 1968.
I was 10 years old, and Star Trek was quite a bit different from the rest of the science fiction on T.V. It didn't use rocketships to travel absurd distances (in absurdly short times). While it was not particularly scientifically accurate, it did seem to make an effort not to be blatantly absurd in its violations of known science (as a budding geek, this appealed to me -- they were concerned not to insult my intelligence; a rare quality in television programming).
Occasionally
Between $20-$40.
The Sketchbooks (I have the "First Contact" and "Original Series" books).
I like the original series for reasons of nostalgia and because it's a snapshot of the 1960's view of the future. I also like ST: The Next Generation, and ST: Deep Space Nine (the jury's out on ST: Voyager. I think Voyager is "fluff" but it's somewhat entertaining if nothing else is on).
Lt. Barkley, from ST: The Next Generation. He's a fish out of water, yet he is very capable. Others do not appreciate his ability, and he does not have confidence in his abilities either. We're all like that at one time or other. The other characters can be maddenningly "perfect". Barkley, clay feet and all, is more like the rest of us. I don't know if he's appeared in more than two episodes, but I really liked the character when I saw him.
Me. Why? I don't think they're ready for me. It would be interesting, at least from my point-of-view.
*L!* I liked that sketch! I do not have any information of that nature. It's too much work, and I'd rather fill in the blanks of Star Trek history on my own (trying to keep what I invent consistent with what I know of the Trek universe).
The previous statement was a feeble plug for my Trek Website. There's a link to it at "Come Hither and Yawn..."
The Horta was actually portrayed by an overripe side of beef named "Fred". (Just kidding, but my last answer makes all the rest "N/A", so I might as well have fun with them. )
It's less expensive and more interesting than philately, and the people you meet (both on-line and IRL) are rather interesting -- not always for Trek-related reasons.
Of course, your survey results will probably be somewhat skewed unless you post it at several different forums. Each forum is a community with its own unique character (and characters, for that matter). You might also want to give that survey to some Trek fans who aren't on line as well. (Just adding my 2¢.)

C) A Star Trek fan
or
D) Disgruntled Trek fan
2. How long have you been a fan?
Since '87, the year Alfred Bester died.
3. How or why did you become a fan?
Dad was a Trek fan and we watched Encounter at Farpoint when it premiered. Then I started watching the originals and thought them to be better than the new stuff so I got a little hooked.
4. Do you purchase Star Trek merchandise?
Yes
5. How much do you spend per year on Star Trek merchandise?
I'd say around $120 (avg. $10 a month streched through the whole year).
6. What is your favourite piece of Star Trek Merchandise and why?
I get a kick listening to the soundtracks of Trek I, II, III, and VI.
7. What is your favourite Star Trek series?
TOS
8. Who is your favourite character, and why?
Not sure, I liked Kirk and Sisko because they weren't afraid to shoot back (a problem with most Starfleet captains these days).
9. Which character would you most like to be in Star Trek, and why?
I don't wish to meet any of them. I like the characters in Babylon 5/Crusade and Earth: Final Conflict a hell of a lot better.
10. In the Saturday Night Live sketch 'Get a Life' the 'Trekkies' portrayed there collect information such as the combination to Kirk's safe. Do you believe that you possess any information like this?
I know some behind the scenes info, but I usually don't care about the actors too much, just the quality of the writing.
12. Why do you collect this information?
Hobby. It helps to know what really goes on behind the scenes.

1. What term do you use to describe yourself as a Star Trek Fan?
Well, "Trek fan" among those who don't know anything. But "Trekkie", as long as the person I'm talking to knows that that term does not mean someone who keeps three Starfleet uniforms in their closet and expects to make contact w/ Vulcans in 2063.
2. How long have you been a fan?
I'm not sure precisely, but I remember watching the DS9 premiere when it first aired, so I started watching TNG sometime not terribly long before that.
3. How or why did you become a fan?
Not sure. I just started watching TNG one night, and I liked it.
4. Do you purchase Star Trek merchandise?
Some, yes.
5. How much do you spend per year on Star Trek merchandise?
Hardly anything.
6. What is your favourite piece of Star Trek Merchandise and why?
The Encyclopedia, since it has all that trivia that comes up later in this questionnaire.
7. What is your favourite Star Trek series?
TNG.
8. Who is your favourite character, and why?
I really don't know.
9. Which character would you most like to be in Star Trek, and why?
None.
10. In the Saturday Night Live sketch 'Get a Life' the 'Trekkies' portrayed there collect information such as the combination to Kirk's safe. Do you believe that you possess any information like this?
Well, yes, but I don't memorize it on purpose. My brain just has a tendency to store away useless information. But, that's what the encyclopedia is for; so it doesn't have to be memorized.
Besides, I don't think Kirk even has a safe... ;-)
11. If so what is your most unique piece of Star Trek trivia or information?
I don't know.
12. Why do you collect this information?
Why does someone collect stamps, or coins, or baseball cards? It's a hobby. Just something to do.

It depends; right now it's around 120$ but in the
beginning I think I spent up to 250$ a year, mainly in
books and magazines.

Can't really say, although the Tech manuals and Sketch

1. What term do you use to describe yourself as a Star Trek Fan?
A) Trekkie (I'm completely unashamed!)
2. How long have you been a fan?
I started watching TOS reruns on public TV in the early 80's.
3. How or why did you become a fan?
Three reasons: I've always enjoyed the writers' attempts to invent solid, logical solutions to the difficult scientific/engineering problems of interstellar exploration. I appreciated the continuity and "fullness" of the ST universe. And I quickly became very attached to the individual characters.
4. Do you purchase Star Trek merchandise?
Yes, occasionally.
5. How much do you spend per year on Star Trek merchandise?
Between $50 and $100.
6. What is your favourite piece of Star Trek Merchandise and why?
My favorite has to be the Encyclopedia. It lets me get a ST fix whenever I need one! Seriously, it's a compendium of all the things I mentioned in question three: the technobabble, the continuity, and the characters.
7. What is your favourite Star Trek series?
The Next Generation, because so much of our canon comes from TNG. TOS laid the foundation, DS9 and VGR build upon it, but TNG provided the structure.
8. Who is your favourite character, and why?
Ben Sisko... because "Picard never hit me!" Seriously, Sisko is a great combination of the things I liked about Kirk and the things I liked about Picard.
9. Which character would you most like to be in Star Trek, and why?
I think Will Riker... He works with a great team (the Ent-D/E bridge crew) and, unlike his captain, he's also a part of the team. Of course, he's also the most desired guy in Starfleet since James Kirk himself... ;-)
10. In the Saturday Night Live sketch 'Get a Life' the 'Trekkies' portrayed there collect information such as the combination to Kirk's safe. Do you believe that you possess any information like this?
If you mean innane Star Trek trivia, then yes, I probably "possess" my share...
11. If so what is your most unique piece of Star Trek trivia or information?
(I think the real reason you've posted this so-called "survey" is to collect up everybody else's Star Trek trivia for yourself! Well it won't work... I'm keeping mine secret!)
12. Why do you collect this information?
I guess I don't really collect it so much as it just gets lodged in my memory. So there's no reason... it just happens!

3. How or why did you become a fan?
I saw a few TOS episodes, and liked them. When I saw the 'Encounter at Farpoint' I was hooked.
4. Do you purchase Star Trek merchandise?
Yes
5. How much do you spend per year on Star Trek merchandise?
Depends, I have bought about $250 of Star Trek stuff in 1999.
6. What is your favourite piece of Star Trek Merchandise and why?
That's a tie between the model of the Ent-E (which is one of best looking ships in Star Trek) and my First Contact style uniform (which fits very well)
7. What is your favourite Star Trek series?
Again a tie between DS9 and Voyager.
8. Who is your favourite character, and why?
Kes, very beautifull girl with a wonderful voice.
9. Which character would you most like to be in Star Trek, and why?
Captain of the Relativity, the best ship EVER to appear in Star Trek.

1. What term do you use to describe yourself as a Star Trek Fan?
Star Trek Fan.
2. How long have you been a fan?
Since I was in high school? I forget when THAT was.
3. How or why did you become a fan?
I think I was watching TNG and saw the ep "Yesterday's Enterprise". That probably started the ball rolling.
4. Do you purchase Star Trek merchandise?
I have some, but I haven't purchased anything else as of late.
5. How much do you spend per year on Star Trek merchandise?
Can't really say. If I feel like buying it, then I'll get it. Otherwise, I usually skip these things.
6. What is your favourite piece of Star Trek Merchandise and why?
Two, actually. First is a poster which has a cutaway of the Enterprise-D, with a small description of all the areas, departmets, and gadgets. Created in 1993. Bought this one at a university-based company which was selling posters. Last one too, I got very lucky.
Second is a glowing phone with the Enterprise-D mounted on it. When the phone rings, it Enterprise-D lights up, (nacelles, deflector, lights and all) and it makes a Red Alert sound. Given to me by my girlfriend.
7. What is your favourite Star Trek series?
I'd have to say TNG hands down. They've got very good thought-provoking and interesting eps.
8. Who is your favourite character, and why?
Undoubtedly Captain Picard. Strong Leadership skills and such, he would probably have my vote for any World Leader.
9. Which character would you most like to be in Star Trek, and why?
Picard, again.
10. In the Saturday Night Live sketch 'Get a Life' the 'Trekkies' portrayed there collect information such as the combination to Kirk's safe. Do you believe that you possess any information like this?
No. People who possess any form of this information about ANY famous person needs their head checked.
11. If so what is your most unique piece of Star Trek trivia or information?
Trivia? Well, trivia is a different story other than vital information as asked in Question 10, provided that the Trivia itself doesn't go too far. What is the best piece of Trivia that I've got? Don't know, but I have a chock full of them in two books about the Star Trek Universe.
12. Why do you collect this information?
Irrelevant.

1. What term do you use to describe yourself as a Star Trek Fan?
B and C
2. How long have you been a fan?
Casual fan: 3 years
Avid fan: 5 years
3. How or why did you become a fan?
I was first hooked on TNG when I saw it in Chinese in Taiwan. It took me beyond the confinement of my world and the world of prevalent Chinese soap operas. Data was (and still is) my hero.
4. Do you purchase Star Trek merchandise?
Hell yes! I make 'em too! (Once made an Odo sculpture in ceramics class)
5. How much do you spend per year on Star Trek merchandise?
Depending on character/availability/store discount, about $40-50.
6. What is your favourite piece of Star Trek Merchandise and why?
My 9-inch Odo action figure--because Odo's my favorite character and the figure looks reasonably like him.
7. What is your favourite Star Trek series?
Deep Space Nine, hands down.
8. Who is your favourite character, and why?
Odo: He's Different, an outcast. He's kinda stiff at times, but he's really funny when he gets his turn (his scenes with Quark are priceless). He's got a softer, passionate side with Kira and Lwaxana Troi. He's struggling with his identity and with a biological family he can't accept. Oh, and he can shapeshift.
9. Which character would you most like to be in Star Trek, and why?
Data, actually, even though I like Odo better. He doesn't have to sleep (pulling an all-nighter would be a cinch!)or eat (no more messy sewage). He's strong, smart, AND good-looking. Able to multi-task. And he's "fully functional."
10. In the Saturday Night Live sketch 'Get a Life' the 'Trekkies' portrayed there collect information such as the combination to Kirk's safe. Do you believe that you possess any information like this?
A few I memorized when I was *really* into it. Now I just watch the shows and enjoy. Numbers be damned.
11. If so what is your most unique piece of Star Trek trivia or information?
The Krenim's Chronoton torpedo's phase variance was 1.47 milliseconds.
And my favorite piece of technobabble from Voyger's "Message in a Bottle": "The secondary gyrodine relays in the propulsion-field intermatrix have depolarized!"
12. Why do you collect this information?
It's fun and it shows how much time I used to have.

--I said that I had lost the faith, Stephen answered, but not that I had lost self-respect. What kind of liberation would that be to forsake an absurdity which is logical and coherent and to embrace one which is illogical and incoherent?
James Joyce, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
I have posted this on several other forums, and I am now compiling the information, there were a couple more questions on some other forums, but that was down to human error!.
I should be finished writing in a week or two for anyone that is interested in the results.
I shall return!
Actually, I have a better idea, why don't you post your report HERE at Flare? Would be a great place to peruse and talk about your piece of work.
