This is not a spoiler, but a speculation...

I've read that Spiner feels that Data can't continue in the series, because as an andriod, he can't age...but Spiner is. Does anyone else think that Star Trek X will feature Data becoming permanently offline?

That's always been my thought. Data would be crushed like the Terminator or something, and Geordi would have to rebuild him. The story could feature Lore. They bring him back to try and get the parts right but accidently reactivate him. It'd be Brent Spiner's last movie and he'd actually be playing Lore most of the time. It could end with the new actor assuming the role of Data.

How about if they covered Data with skin, like the Borg Queen offered? This way, you wouldn't have to worry about Brent Spiner aging, because the skin would age as well!

I think that if Data dies, no one should replace him.
No one can do Data like Brent Spiner. He has built that character, it wouldn't be right for someone else to take over IMO.

I have to agree with Black Knight. mabey something should malfunction in data, with no way to repair him so they shut him down to preserve his life, that way, he's still alive somehow.

The problem isn't with finding a way to make Data age. They already coped out on that by saying he has an aging program (he must also have weight gaining program). The problem is that Brent Spiner doesn't really want to be Data anymore IMO.

I am torn on this issue. I'd hate the next movie, which quite probably will be the last we ever see of the TNG crew, to be burdened with such a depressing theme as the death of a main character. Sure STII did, but ST3,4 etc did a reset on that. Generations too had Kirk's finale, which certainly left my sister in a bad way afterwards (she cried for hours, and she was 17 at the time!)

On the other hand, the problem with Data is he is effectively immortal. He will live to see everyone he knows die, and quite probably long enough to see the "fall of the Federation" if we believe in historical cycles, etc. That can't be much fun.
Would it be so cruel to give him mortality, since it is now one of the few pieces of "humanity" which he is still without? As Picard said, "It is our mortality that defines us."

Hmmmm.

OOOOOOOoooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I just had an idea. What would it be like to see them be forced to download Data's consciousness, or hook up his brain, to the ship, a la Ghost in the Shell and Neuromancer? That would be a fantastic concept movie, or (pay attention Series V writers) a great SINGLE episode for any series set in the far Trek future - along the lines of the Spock, Scotty eps for TNG. Just think, a roving intelligent ship.

Maybe Q should come along and grant Data's wish to be a real human. Of course, before that, he would have to bring Soong back to life, and Soong and Data would get trapped in a whale, and Data's nose would get longer every time he lied...

Oh, never mind. That's been done. :-)

I would really hate to see data die, but if it comes to that I would hope they do something that is half way intelligent.

I don't think downloading Data's consciousness into a ship would be a fitting fate for Data. After how far Data's come in developing his humanity, it would be a shame to basically negate all of that in one move.

Unless they plan to do more than one more movie with the entire TNG cast, I don't really see the need to do anything to Data.

Why does Data have to die anyway? None of the TOS characters died in ST:VI and (at the time) that was to be their last movie.

Well, for all but three of them, it was.

But you're right. If they aren't going to do any further movies w/ the TNG group, there's no reason to kill him off.

As for his death (if it happens) being "halfway intelligent"... After how they finished off Kirk, I wouldn't count on it.

my opinion is the same, data's death is inevitable, and it will be done poorly, lame like Kirk's death, but I agree though, why not just end it with him alive, the next trek movie will probably be the last TNG trek movie

I'll say it again, I don't think Brent Spiner wants to do Data anymore. For him to agree to be Data in the next (and possibly last) TNG movie, they may have to write in something that removes him from the role. He himself has said though (I'm paraphrasing here) that he doesn't think it's the end of Data, just the end of Data with him.

This removal would have to be either a change of appearance and minor personality changes for Data, or Data's death. But, if they say it will definately be the last TNG movie, I don't see any reason to get rid of him either.

-If it's the last thing we see of the TNG crew, let him live though one more movie (or find an excuse for him not being there, apart from death)
-If he "must" die, then they should let him dead, not like Spock and countless others who keep coming back.
-Don't even think of replacing Data's consience or tricks like that, no-one can play him like Spiner.

Actually the reason I was suggesting this is because it would allow Spiner to keep doing small roles as Data while avoiding the old android thing. It'd just be his voice, or at most an image of him. Of course, Data would probably create a holo image of himself so maybe it doesn't fix the problem.

Er, how do you know? If everyone had that attitude, we'd never have had Brosnan's Bond or Tom Baker's Doctor. Or ever Robert Llewelyn's Kryten.

Well, I just think that if anyone tried to do Data, it just wouldn't be the same. Brent Spiner is just too good.
Oh, and in my opinion, Sean Connery is still the best Bond.

Hey... if we can create such great characters as JarJar Binks, why can't we do a CGI of Data...Spiner could still do his voice, but Data will never get old...

What do you guys think?

well jar jar is definatly a bad example of a CGI charachter, but I'm sure you've all heard about final fantasy: the movie, the charachters are supposed to be photorealistic, they could make a photorealistic CGI data, and Spiner could just do the voice. That way Data will never grow old. Only problem is cost, but I think that even if it was cost effective, it still wouldn't get done.

Yes, but that doesn't work if Spiner doesn't want to do the role at all anymore.

And think the "great" reference to Binks referred to the CGI work, not the character itself. At least, I hope so...

Spiner does not want to be known as Data for the rest of his life.

But, if he could be talked into another movie lotsa make up would work. Look at Michael Dorn and Worf.

This could all be avoided if Data would just get skin. Why not have Q make him human, but with that kind of luck they probably would kill him off? Is Spiner fed up with the part, or does he just feel there is no realistically way for him to play the part any longer?

He's just getting greedy. He wants lots of money for each new job because he's worried about his income in the future.

Having Q turn up is an excellent idea, but I doubt it'll happen. Hell, I doubt there'll BE another TNG movie. I predict a mish-mash that flops and kills the franchise. But I hope to be proved wrong.

Spiner said in an interview, that he wanted Data to die in Insurredtion, but that when he got the scrpit, there was a note from Berman that said,"Sorry, kill you next time". He's tired of the role and wants out, as does Dorn, and I've heard it said that Burton wants out, so I think it's safe top say this will be the last film, if they do another one at all. No one has contracts for a tenth movie, and Marjel R said that the next movie was on a back burner right now.

If Dorn wants out, why in the world did he get on DS9? And why does he keep coming back for the movies, which is a bit unnatural in and of itself?
