In the episode "where no man has gone before", the medical record for dr. dehner states that she attended the college of medicine in the tri-planetary academy. could this tri-planetary academy be the original idea for starfleet academy, first mentioned in tng? or could the tri-planetary academy have evolved into starfleet academy? what is also interesting to me is the mention of a college of medicine in the academy. this is like many colleges or universities in the us which have separate "departments", or colleges under an umbrella name. for instance, uc berkeley has the college of business and the college of science. could starfleet academy have a similar structure?------------------

I don't think I've ever seen that ep all the way through and don't remember that line of dialouge, but what it reminds me of is the UFP logo. If you'll notice, there is an oval filled with stars but three of the stars are bigger than the rest and glowing if I'm not mistaken. It very well could be that the original idea for the Federation was that it was made up of only 3 systems. In the Trek universe though, we know that nothing evolved into starfleet or the Academy. The dates when both of those organizations were incepted is the same. ------------------ "A gathering of Angels appeared above my head. There may have been only 3 founding members of the UFP, but in the era of TOS we saw a pennant with 13 stars on it - presumably referring to founding members.the tri-planetary academy could be a more Terran-oriented institution. Perhaps Earth, Mars and Alpha Centauri? ------------------ Gene: "I AM Star Trek" Yvonne: "You can't sum yourself up in so small a package." Gene: "SMALL?!!" - Gene Roddenberry: The Last Conversation

The files also contain a number of absurdities, like Dehner's age of 21 years and Mitchell's of 23 (these are their ages during the last medical, btw, not at some old medical in the distant past - Mitchell's rank in the files is already Lt.Cmdr!). I think the Tri-planetary Academy is a local facility in the Aldebaran colony where Dehner was picked up - perhaps there are three inhabited planets in the Aldebaran system? It might be a local facility of Starfleet Academy, though - an extension of the San Francisco facilities. SF Academy could use quite a few such local facilities if it has to provide the entire multi-thousand-ship Starfleet with officers... Timo Saloniemi
