As we all probably know by now, the next ep is all about Charles Barclay's obsession with getting Voyager home...

Does this mean that the episode is going to be a TNG episode with very little Voyager interaction.

I've read some interview with Martina Sirtis and Dwight Shultz ... but they didn't reveal too much.

Anyone have any thoughts or insights as to how Barkley could contact Voyager a whole Quadrant away???? Well.. is it half a quadrant now??

I used to think the DS9 uniforms were good, but I long ago went off them. The FC uniforms are much cooler, and I think they'd look OK on Voyager. But I still oppose any change because it'd be nonsensical - of all the info to pass onto a ship trapped 35,000 LY away, new uniform patterns would be pretty far down the list.

But I really hope Barclay's got a promotion - if he's still a Lt. JG I'll be pissed.

Starfleet denies accusations of promotion

San Francisco, Ca. Sources at Starfleet Command were quick to deny allegations Wednesday that they were engaged in promoting their officers.

"These rumours are an outrage," fumed Admiral Murgatroyd, head of Public Relations for the military branch of the Federation. "Whoever has been spreading these scurrilous accusations will be hunted down and prosecuted to the full reach of the law. It is a grave insult to the many millions of men, women and things serving in Starfleet to suggest that they do so for any sort of career advancement."

Admiral Murgatroyd pointed with pride to Lt. Commander Data, Second Officer of the Federation's flagship USS Enterprise, who has retained his current rank for nearly 15 years. "There's the kind of example we like to see," he said, adding defensively "and it's nothing to do with his being an android either!"

Federation news services have been unable to confirm the rumours, and the only officer suspected of being promoted, Lt. Reginald Barclay, dismissed the suggestion with a vague mention of 'writers screwing up,' before turning green and running away.

I loved it ! Lotsa suspense.. even a bit of 'barclay espionage' !!

When do you think they'll talk to the AQ next.

The one thing I didn't understand was .. why couldn't they recreate the micro-wormhole after it had collapsed??

Was it because the Pulsar was moving out of range?? You'd figure they'd have a greater window to play with where that is concerned!!

From what I understood, the pulsar was destroyed when the micro-wormhole was created. When it collapses, there was nothing left.

I see ...
So.. they actually imploded the pulsar to create a mini-wormhole... would that create a HUGE wormhole??

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

Pulsar imploding? I didn't pick up on that. Based on what, exactly? I ask because, as a neutron star, a pulsar is about as imploded as you can get without collapsing to infinity.

Anyway, the impression I got was that the conditions required (position of array, position of pulsar, various subspace conditions, etc.) were sufficiently rare as to make the timing critical.

Alrighty then.. thank you for the clarification..

Now..my original question stands.. Assuming that time WAS critical, could they not STILL retry the communication by aiming the array at the pulsar's new position and attempting it again!?

Is there another theorectical way to create a mini-wormhole?

I guess they would have to build the array next to a pulsar similar. Knowing that.. I wouldn't waste anytime. They could theoretically create a bigger array next to a pulsar, contact Voyager again through a bigger wormhole, then piggy-back and transporter beam through the carrier wave and voila: Voyager crew is home.

Not very exciting but theoretically sound wouldn't you say?

The big deal was that a specific type of pulsar was going (class B itinerant or whatever) was passing within four billion klicks of the MIDAS array. They may be able to point the array in the right direction, but the pulsar wouldn't be close enough.

It also seems like SFC now has the ability to communicate with Voyager at will, but Voyager can't respond until they build a hyper-subspace communications array. (Which, apparently, doesn't have to be as big as MIDAS.) IIRC, the original idea was for SFC to transmit their hyper-subspace data to Voyager and wait for them to respond.

I don't think beaming everyone through is really feasible, since the micro-wormhole didn't stay stable for very long. Even though they were able to pull off a data transfer, beaming 140-odd people and a holoemitter would take a while.

Posted by Alshrim Dax (Member # 258) on :

That's what I'm saying tho'

Why don't they park the MIDAS array near the same type of pulsar.. surely it's not the only one...

They can make the array bigger and better, now that they know what they have to do...

make a bigger more stable wormhole... BOOM.. instand transporter corridor.

------------------
- Alshrim Dax
The Other Dax

Posted by Lt. Tom on :

"Parking" the MIDAS array next to the same sort of pulsar would be a problem, since an itinerant pulsar would by definition be moving. If you could get a starship to tractor it, you might have something, although that might give you problems keeping it in alignment with the pulsar. Of course, a hyper-subspace transmitter might have to be stationary to work.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

I suppose the question to ask is whether or not there are any non-itinerant pulsars that are of the right type to make the wormhole...

I can't believe none of you pointed out the fact that voyager was like 30,000 light years closer to home than SFC would have known, so there is no way that they could have contacted them.

My idea to contact voyager is to create micro worm holes at specific distances and transport little transponder beacon thingees that voyager could use to keep in contact with SFC. What do you think?

and I, I took the road less traveled by, and that has made all the diference.

Posted by Alshrim Dax (Member # 258) on :

But why settle for just that, when you can use another pulsar (whatever its designation) to create a big enough wormhole that they can send a probe into where they can route a transporter signal through and beam them over to the AQ -- as was suggested in the first or second season with the Romulans!!!??

------------------
- Alshrim Dax
The Other Dax

Posted by Lt. Tom on :

Marc: I think the distance problem was pointed out in one of the several threads dealing with Pathfinder. I don't think the beacons would be used, since SFC is already counting on Voyager to build a hyper-subspace transmitter. Also, I would think that a micro-wormhole would be much too small to admit a hyper-subspace relay.

Alshrim: We don't know if you can use anything but a class-B itinerant pulsar to make a micro-wormhole, much less a larger one.

Kosh: I heard the same thing.. I heard that this was the episode that starts the big snowball rolling down the hill as far as getting Voyager home..

I think that towards the end of the season, they'll know a way home, and getting there is the BIGGEST problem held over for next season!

LT.Tom: Good point.. but I doubt very much that this one is the only example of that type of pulsar in the AQ. I'm sure they could find another one to use.

IT'd be small of us to think that it was the only one. IF there was one.. there are others.. of that I have no doubt.

Send a science vessel out to survey for one. As Admiral Paris.. I wouldn't waste any time .. I'd be sending a ship out looking for another one PRONTO.

The problem isn't finding another pulsar--heck, the one they used in the ep could still be viable. I do see a few potential problems, though. First, if the pulsar has to be itinerant (read moving), the array would have to move with it to sustain the wormhole, and I've already mentioned the problems with that. Even if you could find a suitable stationary pulsar, you'd have to park the array by it. It seems that constructing a new array would take quite a while, and we don't know how long it would take to disassemble the existing array, transport it to the site, reassemble it, and prep it for use. Obviously, the quickest method would be to tractor it, but we don't know if the array can handle a tractor beam or warp travel.
