Probably old news, but still some nice details and tidbits I didn't know. Like dr. Boyce originally being called Bones. And Spock being a red-faced half-Martian. And the mysterious Number One. And the navigator Jose Ortega, a shy Latin man (turned into Jose Tyler in "The Cage").
The 'sentient cattle' episode idea is very interesting. I wonder why they never did it.

Wow... that's fascinating. I've never read too much about the pre-"The Cage" origins of TOS.
I noticed quite a few story concepts that got mixed and matched with other plots, especially ideas like "Charlie X" and "Mirror, Mirror." But then there were other plots that looked interesting too... like "Star Trek" meets "Alien."

yes.. i first read in partially as reprinted in the Allan Asherman Compendium.. i recently saw the Trek5 .pdf and printed out a copy for myself.. methinks the unused plot treatments would be some juicy gems for an enterprising writer to adapt into novel or comic form.
