Adding exterior views and viewscreens with more realistic graphics to the old series could work. Imagine actually seeing starships instead of TOS' yellow blobs, and redoing some of the man-in-suit aliens. OTOH, there's the risk that it just won't look right.
I don't know. If they do it right, it can be fun. If they screw things up by modernizing it too much, or by making it look weird, it'll probably get the TAS treatment.

Sure, they could make "Special Editions: of every one of the 79 TOS episodes. Sure, they could theoretically make a fourth & fifth season utilizing completely CGI effects. But my question is, why? Instead of thinking up this inane crap, shouldn't they instead try harnessing all of this creative energy of theirs for the Star Trek show that's currently on the air now?

There's also the slight problem of needing more than just CGI to recreate the original cast. You need, y'know, voices and stuff. And there's a teeny, tiny problem with DeForest Kelly that would stop him from doing this.

Yeah... it'd probably cause him to roll over in his grave, too.

But, w/ modern technology, they could create all of his dialogue by splicing together clips from the original episodes! Hooray!

Couple this with that Slashdot story about how soon Hollywood-grade special effects hardware will be cheaply available for the home market, and you have a recipe for unlimited horror.
"Hello...Spock. You...really know...how to...turn...me on."

I'm surprised that you never hear anything about voice impersonation software. I mean, if you can create a convincing human APPEARANCE with a computer, why would a voice be undoable?
Posted by ThoughtPyminal (Member # 480) on :
I'm surprised nobody ever heard of people who do voice impersonations...
It's bothersome when people think of software before actual people.
Less time on the computer, for everybody.

Well, you haven't been hanging around the right circles, Omega. But voice stuff is very hard to do.

all bones has to say is "he's dead, jim". problem solved. i just hope braga doesn't write any episodes if they make more "tos" with cgi *shudders*.

With the 60's SFX, doing CGI like that shouldn't be that hard to do. With all the shiny skin from the 8 iches of grease, CGIing their faces shouldn't be that hard either. Pasting Kirk's dialogue wouldn't be that hard if your remember how Shatner acts.

Regarding the article, I saw part of Digital Streams' updated effects for 'The Doomsday Machine,' and they sucked rocks. It was horribly mismatched to the show's look, and their animation was lifeless. Their choice of camera angles was pretty bad too.
I think you could possibly update the effects, but you'd have to match the photographic style and look of the film of the period. Also, you'd want to avoid trendy CGI effects that would age worse than the original effects have.
If you want to see how TOS would look with updated effects, just cut a few Enterprise flybys from TMP or TWOK or their ilk in place of the old shots...if you could replicate that look, it might be acceptable.

Meaning replace the TOS version of the ship with the refitted version?

where did you see the effects? i would like to see them, personally.

Well obviously it's just an example.

There is also the issue of respect, y'know. When they did that Futurama episode of Star Trek, Bones stayed silent throughout, rather than having someone doing an impression of his voice.
I also don't think you could write TOS now. The style of dialogue, nature of the stories, and whatnot are far too primitive for TV today.
There's also the fact that the original cast would demand roughly 7 billion dollars an episode too.
Posted by Colorful Cartman (Member # 256) on :
Besides, they're all way past retirement age.
Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :
They were way past retirement age in 1988.
Posted by Colorful Cartman (Member # 256) on :
Exactly my point.
Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :
Brilliant.
Er, and your point is?
Posted by MrNeutron (Member # 524) on :
I don't agree that you couldn't write TOS appropriate stories today. The best of the episodes are not outdated. Oh sure, there are some cultural references and stylistic things you wouldn't want to replicate, but there's nothing inherantly out of date about stories like "The Doomsday Machine" or "Balance of Terror" or even "The Trouble With Tribbles".
And no one would suggest making a modern "Spock's Brain"...
Oh wait, they did: "Shades of Gray" Posted by ThoughtPyminal (Member # 480) on :
I dunno. I'd really like to see "Spock's Brain" redone. Fuck it, why not? It's would be deadly, with the CGI parts completely not fitting in...I would be laughing so hard it would be WORTH it.
Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :
I'm not sure I see the "Shades of Gray"/"Spock's Brain" parallel. One is a clipshow, and thus very boring. One is intensely silly. But it isn't "Shades of Gray"'s fault that it is boring. That is almost inherint in the medium.
Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :
Actually, after watching "Wolf in the Fold" the other day, I've come to the conclusion that it is at least as silly as "Spock's Brain"...

"And the Children Shall Lead" has what can only be described as "crazy shit" in it.

Hasn't most of TOS, from our modern 21st century perspective? Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :
Yes, but did you see the wellies all those kids were wearing? Crazy shit, I tells ya.

what the hell is a wellie?
