Just happened to see something on TV about the Red Bull Flug Tag held in New Zealand this year, in which this was entered. . .

. . . whereupon it did this. . .

. . . but still won!
Read about it here and here.

Looks cool.
...and it's still more accurate than most of the depictions from the old comic series.

They put a lot of work into it. The saucer looked like it got a bit warped when it hit the water, but that could have already been there.
It's safe to say it was adrift - but salvageable. 8)

^^^ Aye. And if my grandmother had wheels, she'd be a wagon.

I never understood that joke by Scotty. What does it mean? That his grandma was oblong and deep?

Part of that exchange was cut from the original script and did not appear (as I recall) in the final dialog and originally read like:
UHURA Would you look at that?
KIRK My friends, the great experiment: Excelsior, ready for trial runs...
SULU She's supposed to have transwarp drive...
SCOTTY Aye. And if my grandmother had wheels, she'd be a wagon.
KIRK Mr. Scott...
SCOTTY I'm sorry, sir, but as far as I'm concerned, there's nothin' needed for space travel that this old girl doesn't already have.
KIRK Come, come, Scotty. Young minds. Fresh ideas. (dryly) Be tolerant.

Why'd they get rid of Scotty's line - it ads more character to his respect of the ship - tying TOS to "Relics" in TNG.

Except that TNG was 3 years away and 'Relics' years beyond that. Prescient they weren't.

What is "flug"?
Speaking of Excelsior, the people screaming and jumping across the bridge after Chang's 'uppercut' torpedo to Excelsior's saucer, that has got to be the worst "ship movement" overacting in any of the Trek movies. Sulu obviously sat good in his chair, these other four guys must've had Downs syndrome or something...

Well of course they weren't to know what was to come - but it harken's back nicely to the pride he had for the Enterprise. See "The Troubles with Tribbles" for example.

"What is 'flug'?" "Flight".

Any any case, it's not like Scotty's pride for the Enterprise was a hidden trait. It's not bad dialogue, but it's also slightly overexplaining the point being made.

That was bad but my personal favorite has always been the one guy at the back of the Enterprise bridge in TWoK who reacts two seconds later then everyone else and jumps to the right after Khan comes back for another pass in the first battle. I always crack up at that.
