Veteran Star Trek actor James Doohan has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The 84-year-old - who is most famous for playing Scotty in the sci-fi program and was often on the receiving end of Captain Kirk's phrase "Beam me up, Scotty" - has been discovered to be suffering from the most common form of dementia. His wife, Wende Doohan, 47, says, "With Jimmy it's the loss of words. He is not so sick yet that he doesn't know people. And there are times when he is sharp as a tack. But it's the older memories that stick. What he had for breakfast might be an iffy thing, but by golly he could tell you all about how he got the part on Star Trek." A Hollywood tribute will be paid to the father-of-three next month.
Probably why his son wanted that star on the Walk Of Fame for him so badly.

Sucks.

In the coming years I expect to hear alot more about our beloved TOS actors fading away. Its sad, but it will truely be the end of a group of legends when the time finally comes.

"...and was often on the receiving end of Captain Kirk's phrase 'Beam me up, Scotty'..."

Sure he was.

Isn't he pretty old for the onset of Alzheimer's?

Mmmmmm....I dont think there's any point where you become immune.
I recently read thst the only real way to positivly diagnose the disease is post-mortem.

Sad, but there's a lot of kinds of dementia.

Just look at Liam.

"I dont think there's any point where you become immune."

I suspect he simply meant that it typically shows up earlier.

Confusing.

Except, as I recall, "Beam me up, Scotty," is one of those "Play it again, Sam," phrases...famous for some reason, but never actually spoken in the production.

I think Kirk might have said, "Beam me up, Mr. Scott," in one episode, though. And in The Doomsday Machine he said, "Gentlemen...beam me aboard."

That's what Tim and Alshrim were getting at, unless I'm mistaken.

I can't speak for Alshrim, but I was indeed referring to the fact that Kirk never said "beam me up, Scotty" on TOS, much less did he do so "often".

Yip.. I was concurring with Tim [Wink]

In fact .. to my knowledge, i don't even think "Beam Me up, Mr. Scott" was said.. however, he DID say, "Mr. Scott," Dramatic Shatner Pause, "Beam us up!"

Cheers

Mr. Worf said, "beam me up", right after they found Mr. Scott...

He'd have gutted Scotty in some Klingon ritual of not being a late-season TNG pansy if I wrote it.
