Hi Guys Having watch a lot of the on going mission to Mars and just starting watching some of stuff back from the Cassini mission going on at Saturn and just loving it all I have a question. I was wondering how much of an influence trek has on NASA cause I look at these missions and they just have a �Trek� spirit to them. Anybody else have any felling on this? Just wondering and thank ;-)

Well, exploration in space is a large part of the 'spirit' of Star Trek. You may be interested in the NASA project at http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/bpp/ Unfortunatly, the funding was cut to this project by a bunch of idiots.

Lots of people who are into science fiction go on to be scientists. (Not most, surely, but a sizable fraction.) Lots of people who are into science fiction are or were at one time into Star Trek. (The same applies.) So you've got people working on real spacecraft that are fond of particular fake spacecraft. But there's not much more than that going on. (I mean, OK, aside from the naming of the first shuttle, but that wasn't NASA's idea.) Star Trek isn't responsible for Cassini or anything.
And, OK, yeah, Nichelle Nichols did some recruiting for them.
I mean, it's neat and everything, but you've probably got as many Asimov fans at NASA as you do Star Trek ones. Or what have you.

The first shuttle was named Enterprise because of Star Trek fans organizing a massive letter writing campaign to NASA.

Ya know, even though NASA wanted to name Enterprise as Constitution instead, there was nothing stopping them from naming a later shuttle with that name. It would have been nice having an Enterprise class shuttle Constitution.

Well, you know, I'd be interested in knowing which came first, the X-33 Venturestar or the Venus class from the Spaceflight Chronology.
I don't know the publishing date on the Chronology.
