It looks really snazzy though. And it's a Trek game, so I shouldn't complain.

I knew about those games. I am not terribly impressed with what I am seeing. I'll try to reserve final judgement until they're closer to release.

Yeah I'm gonna reserve final judgement to, but I really hope this game is good. If it is, then I'm gonna need a new graphics card. Did anyone also spot the new TOS Vessels...mmmm Original Series goodness.
Actually looks like an ENT/TOS Hybrid.

And that ship actually looks rather interesting. And that double-hulled ship looks like the dreadnought from SFC...
Posted by Pensive's Wetness (Member # 1203) on :
so this is a game in the vein of SFC1,2 & 3? but no meation of SFC so they won't annoy previous game licence holders?
looks nice but ive seen since with SFC3 too....
hmmm.....

It's amore like Armada than anything from what I hear- made by the same guys too.

Aha!

I loves my Trek a bit too much, I guess.

Will this game be like Bridge Commander (but able to give orders to other ships in your fleet) or will it be just another 2D RTS game with snazzy graphics?
Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :
I'm right with Neut. Bridge Commander has been the hottest shit in Trek Gaming for the last half decade. I wants another, I do.

Bridge Commander. Pfft. I tried playing that once. I didn't get far because I couldn't get people to follow my orders! Pleh.

Yes, like Vanda Station has been the warmest place on Antarctica.

The best PC game in my opinion was Starfleet Academy, ripe with cutscenes with real actors and a solid 3D space battle system, a functioning tractor beam and wonderful Damage Control. And Shatner was occasionally fun in the scenes, too.
The later Klingon Academy just boggled me, they'd screwed up the space battle parameters so that in the first level in the demo, it took me 20-30 minutes at full speed to catch up to and destroy some itsy bitsy damn science vessel, during which time it bombed my warship within an inch of its life. And this was on "Easy". And in the previous game, I'd taken the Klingon flagship Ber'Ta on "Hard" in one sitting (although a long one). So fucking unbalanced.
My fav is the Ambassador and the Defiant attacking a Negh'Var.
The whole setup of the game sounds like "Star Wars: Empire at War", only with four factions instead of two. Could be good.

A couple of the match-ups seem odd: that Connie kitbash with four nacelles and dual secondary hulls squaring off against a Borg Tactical Cube should last all of a second....
Posted by Mark (Member # 1819) on :
whats funny is that most of those ship models are very closely based onto ships that have been available for bridge commander for about 3 years lol.
Posted by Kazeite (Member # 970) on :
Sigh...
I guess that there won't be any game where any Excelsior has correctly lit nacelles...
A small detail, yeah, but I'm amazed how different game companies consistently get it wrong.

Yeah have you seen the Ambassador class, looks just like the one Pneumonic81 made for Bridge Commander back in the day.
As for the Excelsior, it should be noted that it is the excelsior refit from Generations, not the original configuration. I sure do hope the original is in the game though, because I loathe the refit.

Actually, we've never seen a TOS-era ship fight against a modern ship (except for that D7 sleeper ship that attacked Voyager, but they took the D7 out with a precision hit, instead of slugging it out), they could be tougher than we think. Like facing off a South Dakota class battleship against a Ticonderoga at close range. My point is that I just rewatched TOS "The Changeling", and Spock famously said that one energy discharge from Nomad was like 90 standard photon torpedoes hitting Enterprise, and that it could take 3 hits before it broke.
270 torpedoes, hitting 90 at a time. So either the hull is very thick or the torps are in need of viagra, but regardless it will be interesting to see how much the cutting beams and disruptor volleys have been weakened on the tactical cube for it to be able to be defeated by a TOS ship, if at all.

I might get this for 360. Looks interesting. Is it like Armada where you pick a race and build bases and starships?

The impression I got from the Enterprise mirror universe episodes was that the standard torpedoes were fairly weak compared to the phasers. Maybe in the TOS era there is danger of an enemy destroying the torpedoes immediately after launch, so they can't be too powerful or else risk damaging the firing ship. When going after the cloaked Romulan vessel, it was safe to have the torpedoes posses a greater yield since the Romulans wouldn't be firing back. Plus, I suppose that since each hit is 90, then three hits would be needed if the ship could actually only take 190 torpedoes...
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
Nim, Torpedos hae come a looong way between TMP and TNG- consider that the Enterprise in TWOK wails on unshielded Reliant with torps - inflicting little more than explosive impact, but by TNG a single torpedo completely vaporizes the Lantree.
I agree with Neutrino that torps were likely far less powerful than phasers for a long time, but gradually that changed.
I think in TOS they're small change but have zero power drain for the ship (allowing more juice foe shields and engines).
Shields have also evoloved (naturally) so TNG shields that might hold off the Borg for a few precious seconds would not be available to a TMP era ship (explaining why the Melborne ate it so quickly).
So, a TOS/TMP ship would not be a vaguely fair match- the Borg might even ignore the ship as not worth their time to assimilate.
Looking at the tech gap between the TOS era Defiant and everything else from Enterprise, it's likely a TMP era ship would be adrift in a universe of uber-warships.
The guys STSYCS figured that a Runabout with torp pod could likely take out a TOS Connie.

YAY EGA TREK!
Newer ships likley have a better SIF, and are made of tin foil and paperclips.
The old ones are made of cast iron (or duranium) and have 12" hulls.
Once the SIF is down, than the older ships can slug it out more than the newuns.
That's my theory any way.

Egads! But isn't Trek in sixteen colors inferior?
Posted by Mars Needs Women (Member # 1505) on :
I saw the trailer for Legacy and there is no indication of it being an RTS like Armada. It seems more focused on ship to ship combat like Bridge Commander and Starfleet Command. It does look sweet though.

Which makes this error even more severe, since in Excelsior-refit the only glowing part of its nacelles were Bussards collectors.
(And, yeah, Starfleet Academy RULED! I even got to the special ending )

Which was what? Except for Kirk phasering down the baddies with a big smile?

Which was Kirk and Co. congratulating our cadets on solving extra mission, and then Enterprise warping away after "Space, the final frontier" monologue.
