I'd take a shuttle every time. I think watching that horrific Sonak transporter accident in TMP made me feel like that. Sure the You that steps off the pad in another location retains the memories and knowledge of you, but it wouldnt truely BE you.. Whatsit called...Deep Vain Thrombosis, or something. Which some aeroplane companies are still refusing to believe exists.<P>Whether you believe it exists or not, a similar thing could have happened with the transporters. And, besides, if the syndrome had appeared as soon as they started using them, they would probably have said "TP has existed since transporters were invented."<P>AND let's not forget one thing no-one's mentioned: who says Earth invented the transporter anyway? Membership of the Federation is available as soon as a culture develops warp travel; after that, surely the technological benefits developed by other member worlds are freely available.
