I read over at TrekBBS that John Eaves had done pre-TOS designs that were not based on modern ship designs. Berman saw the designs, said no, and commanded Eaves to modify the Akira. This is from Rick Sternbach.

If that's true, then it's too bad that Eaves is getting dumped on by the fans for his design, when it actually wasn't his choice. One wonders why Alex Jaeger doesn't just sue Eaves/Berman for copyright violation. After all, it was Jaeger who designed the Akira, and any judge with a modicum of brains would see that the Enterprise is a blatant rip-off of the Akira.

Well, I'm sure Jaeger signed one of those contracts where everything that he did on First Contact became the sole creative property of Paramount, and thus Trek. He won't see a red cent for the copious use of his deigns in Voyager and DS9...Mark

I hope we get to see Eaves' designs somewhere, then. It'd go a long way toward restoring his street-cred.

You guys are never gonna believe the really, truly f*cked up dream I had last night.I dreamed that Rick Berman fell into my swimming pool and turned into a whale, and then tried to eat me. I escaped, and he was trapped in my pool. So I brought my friends over and showed them this whale that was trapped in my pool that had once been Rick Berman. He kind of just stayed there for a while, until an earthquake cracked the pool and he drowned. Then I woke up. I swear to God I didn't make this crap up. I actually dreamed it. You know, I just thought of something. Eaves made all these pre-TOS designs which Berman rejected in favor of the Akiraprise. But that doesn't mean that we won't see these designs as other Year One-Starfleet vessels throughout the course of the show. Berman wanted the Enterprise to look like his favorite design, and he got what he wanted. However, if other ships have to be presented, he probably won't be as heavy-handed in their designs (unless for some reason every other Starfleet ship of the period is Enterprise-class...highly doubtful).

You know, that is true. The only time I remember the producers being rather heavy-handed in ship design was for the principle ship (or station) of the series. After that, they really don't give a care about the ships or the reuse and modification of ships to make new ships.Sternbach had to go through three or four designs before the current incarnation of Voyager was deemed acceptable. Whoever did the Defiant had gone through quite a few designs, too. But when it came time for Sternbach to do the Nova, he simply whipped out the pathfinder design from the DS9 tech manual and modifiied it. It was accepted with no problem from the producers. I can guarantee that see some of those other designs. After all, this is a radical shift in time for the series, so all ships will need to be new designs. Nothing from even TOS can be reused in Enterprise. So we will be seeing Eaves' other designs popping up.

Personally... Had I been asked to create such an obviously unoriginal design like the Akiraprise. I would have turned in my resignation.

And thus lost any chance to produce better (in your opinion) ships down the road, when they want "Starfleet ships of the week".Oh, and also giving up what I'm sure is a fairly healthy salary. What is Probert doing now?
