The episode hasn't even begun to air yet, but I just wanted to start the thread dedicated to discussing it, mostly to beat Sigfried out from doing it first ...

Ah, I see.

Anyway, it looks like some more information about the early history of human space exploration. Looks like the Terra Nova mission happened when humans were well into colonizing the rest of the Sol System. Archer mentioned New Berlin on Luna and Utopia Planetia on Mars. How does this compare to what we know of the period?

Also, I do believe that T'Pol actually said something complimentary about humanity. Go figure.

We actually see them use the turbolifts. They didn't have the twisting handles to command the car like in TOS, but they didn't utter a destination either like TNG. Looks like Archer just pushed a button for the Bridge.

The cave set doesn't look to shabby. Looks like either a new build or modification of the "Strange New World" cave set. Really small and cramped-looking; kinda cool actually.

Phlox has just confirmed that he is a Denobulan (not sure about the spelling). He said it to the lead Novan. Haven't we seen him as a Vedek or other Bajoran religious leader on Deep Space Nine? By the way, looks like those Novans are using a projectile based weapon. I guess we can narrow down the time to when plasma/beam type weapons came into widespread use.

Vogon Poet, I guess if you wanted to, you could start a page on your site dedicated to pre-Enterprise era weapons. It looks like the Novans are using standard weapons of the time because Reed could easily identify it as a MK-33 or MK-34. Definitely a projectile weapon. The shots I've seen of the weapon are dark, but it almost looks as if the rifles are a smaller and streamlined version of the TOS phaser rifle.

Actually, we officially have a Continuity Error [tm], though it's one that most people probably won't mind too much. The Terra Nova colony was lost 70 years before the episode (2081). It landed five years before that (2076), and was launched nine years prior (2067). No problem so far. However, they said that Utopia Planitia had already been established on Mars... but "The 37's" (VGR) said that Mars was first colonized in 2103. So there is a glitch somewhere.

The reason I said that most people wouldn't mind is because most people bitched about the 2103 date to begin with.

One possible solution is that Utopia Planitia was just a permenant base, and by Voyager's standards it wasn't a colony until masses of people migrated in 2103. At the time of Enterprise, though, maybe the criteria for "colony" are a little laxer.

Everyone's favorite neighborhood Shik here posting from Maryland. While my anon-o-server scags all the deer snuff porn from Jeff's computer, I thought I'd post my thoughts on the SECOND episode of "Enterprise" I've seen.

Does Erick Avari ever get tired of playing fanatics? Bajoran fanatics, Muslim fanatics, Israeli fanatics, stoneman fanatics. For Kaja's sake, let the man play a MODERATE!!

I see that Travis Mayweather is playing "space "house negro" now... "Stay with the shuttle, Travis..." "YEAS, Massa! Whateva' you SAY, Massa!" (Tie-in note: Kunta Kinte directed this episode!)

I dunno...looks OK, but...we'll wait & see.

Ah, I thought that there was something odd about the dates there. Thanks, Ryan. That also sounds like it could be a plausible work-around for this.

Not a bad episode as far I can believe. The ending was much too rushed, though. The director could have handled the pacing a good deal better through the middle section of the episode. That way we could have a smoother ending and see a little more in the way of convincing the Novans to relocate to the southern islands. Much too nice and tidy of an ending.

On the other hand, the majority of the episode was fairly solid. Mayweather got a bit more to do here, but Reed is still getting gypped on screen time. All he got to do was be a hostage and get dirty. The writers really need to do something with him soon. We'll see about next week, I suppose.

Technology wise, it wasn't too bad an episode. It's nice to see that the writers are still restraining themselves from using the transporter as a "save-the-day" device. It really doesn't seem to be too powerful if it can't reach that far into the caverns. It also looks like Sickbay isn't stocked with too exotic an array of medicinal ingredients if Phlox couldn't fix up a counteragent to the water poisoning.
