Well, I finally watched the new Enterprise episode - I had to have some 'alone' time to watch it and enjoy it. Enjoy it I did - I know a lot of people have drawn parallels to other Star Trek episodes - I think that is rather unfair. I think this episode was VERY VERY good. VERY enjoyable. Anyone else? And although no episode is truley original - I found this to be a quite and original episode for Enterprise. Yes this episode may have been able to be on Voyager - but only a skeleton of the episode we saw. The heart of any of these shows is the characters - we GOT a character ensemble in this episode, they drew from all their previous history. Acting was very well done by all involved - I could easily keep track of which alien was in whos body, a credit to the cast. The heart of this episode was the crew and how they have developed (thanks mainly to season 3 and 4). Going back to Voyager - I think if this episode was to take place on Voyager it wouldn't have worked. It would have ended up with Janeway crowing to these aliens to 'get off her ship'. Where as Archer makes an empassioned plea on behalf of the human species.
Who would have done Reed's and Travis' parts? Ugh - Beltran and McNeil - blah! There was no real heart to Voyager's characters if you think about it. The exception being The Doctor, first and formost and then Seven of Nine.
Just a little thing about Hoshi - nice to get some back story - but the Akido - couldn't she have used that against the Xindi or other 'bullies' that have attacked her before? Or is it something that wouldn't have worked on other larger opponents like Klingons or Xindi Reptiles? Nice interaction between Trip and Hoshi though - we never get those two together.
Languages Hoshi spoke? I picked up Japanese, Russian, Spanish, English (dur), German and Klingon. Would have been nice to get a language from an Earlier episode too - even Vulcan - unless I missed it. Nice about Hoshi being a code-breaker a la the end of season 3 and the Xindi weapon.
Great episode!
4/5 (I don't think I've rated an episode before!)

It makes sense that a linguist would be an excellent code breaker. Like she said, she doesn't necessarily "know" languages, she just recognizes patterns.

Hoshi might have felt ashamed of her skill, when she broke his arm.. and she probably knows that trying to use Akido on a Klingon would only make him horny.
Oh, and it's not to unusual for a delerous person to wander from one language to another, though Klingon would be a stretch, not being one that she uses much.

Maybe she's been practicing it a lot in her free time.

True but she hasn't been a big 'fighter' type in earlier episodes.

Maybe she was drunk at the poker game...

I think he meant the Klingonese, not the Aikido...

Well I just saw at Trektoday.com that "Observer Effect" had the lowest ratings ever. What is WRONG with people - Enterprise has been better than ever this season - well since season 3 (actually in general the series hasn't been too bad - Voyager by this time was pure crap with the odd gem).
Why is no one watching - it is in a bad time-slot? Maybe they should also count the number of people downloading episodes - I notice more download Enterprise and Stargate than most of the other series out there.

Maybe the many weeks of repeats after the Vulcan arc are to blame...

If they move ENT back to Wed then we will have more viewer because Friday is wrong time. I do watch them (all of them) on Friday except for those repeats that has been airing in Jan (sigh) and I also watch Jonny Zero on Fox that start after ENT end on UPN . so tell me what's the rating for that show "Jonny Zero" ?? If it is low rating in same range as ENT then Friday is bad time because it is start of the weekend and everyone is out for fun during prime time.
Mon, I watch "24" (used to be on Tues but that's ok) Tues, "NCIS" and "Veronica Mars" Wed, "Lost" Thurs "CSI" only if I am in mood but otherwise Thurs would be great time slot for me to watch ENT (no, i am sick of wrestling that night) Fri, ENT of course and "Jonny Zero" and "Medical Investigation" I avoid all reality shows they sucks!
So either Wed or Thurs would be good time for ENT. (I know UPN use that time slot for wrestling but I don't watch it) UPN shouldn't have moved them to Friday! (I think they were plotting to kill it off) last season but Fans pleaded so UPN says ok one more season but ON FRIDAY sheesh! If it was on Wed I am sure the rating will pick up more. as for those shows on UPN on Wednesday SUCKS BIG TIME!

I am going to intercede here and thank you for your enthusiastic post, but point out that it no longer matters what ratings the show gets.
(Well, OK, I suppose if we want to engage in idle fantasizing, a monsterous upswing in viewers might alter some plans; but let's be realistic.)
