What exactly is Blue Alert? You might be saying: "Well that's simple. Blue Alert is when Voyager lands." Well, that's not all it's for. Think back to TNG, Season 4. Episode: 'Brothers'. Data takes over the ship. What happens when they have to evacuate the bridge? Blue Alert. What happens when the Prometheus separates? Blue Alert. What happens when Voyager lands? Blue Alert. What is it with Blue Alert? Is it like an auxiliary alert that's used when Red and Yellow alerts aren't necessary?
Please answer this question, somebody. I'm sure I'm not the only one that's curious about this.

I've always thought of blue alert as an emergency alert. You might be saying, "Well, whenever red alert is invoked, its a darn emergency!" But I think red alert is used in emergencies that threaten the structure of the ship. On the other hand, blue alert has been used in evacuations, landings, and ship seperations (at least in the Prometheus). Blue alert seems to relate to something important to the crew but non-threatening to the structure of the ship. Relatively speaking, of course.

Blue lights don't necessarily indicate a blue alert. Emergency lights on the E-D were sometimes blue, although I don't think anyone ever called it a "blue Alert".
I'd apply to it any unusual ship maneouver that requres people to sit up and pay attention, but not start running around screaming like idiots. Such as a landing, or separation sequence.
Just to complicate matters, in TOS "Conscience of the King" Kirk orders a DOUBLE red alert. Was he citing a genuine alert level, or just trying to scare the pants off the crew?

Thanks Siegfried and DeadCujo, it's the third or fourth animated gif I ever made I had thought I saw it on a monitor in the background on an episode of Voyager, but it is quite possible I just made it up, I really don't remember.
Federation Shipmaster, I think the Red Alert is the only one that has the lines traveling inwards from all four directions ... I believe Condition Green is from top and bottom, and Yellow is from the sides.

Yellow Alert- Possible Danger and or threat to the ship and its crew.
Red Alert- Imminent Danger or threat to the ship and its crew.
Condition Blue- Used in cases where ships systems are comprimised (an internal security threat), and/or a notice to secure all work stations
TNG "Brothers"- Data created an artificial problem with the life support that triggered condition blue.
TNG "The Hunted"- Condition Blue was activated when Roga Danar escaped from the brig, the condition blue, no doubt alerted the crew to secure all stations and alert security of an intrenal threat.
VOY "Message in a Bottle"- The Prometheus seperating was never actually classified as Condition Blue or Blue Alert. Blue lights just flashed, supposedly to allow the crew to know the ship is seperating and to secure their stations.
VOY Landing- The Blue lights are an indicator to the crew that the ship is entering an atmosphere to land, as seen in several episodes. This could presumably mean that the crew is to man and secure their stations.

Idon't think that Green Alert had any moving lines.

Do they play bagpipes over the ship's intercom and the replicators only serve haggis and single malt Scotch?

On a serious note remember that in the TOS Episode: The Conscience of the King we had a Double Red Alert.

I guess I should mention that a phaser on overload is why Kirk had called for the Double Red Alert in that episode.
