Yes, the long awaited Chart Wide Update is will in progress now, and the first new chart off the lines is The Federation Fleet - Starboard.

(NOTE: The Charts will from now on be in PNG format. Why? Because it's better than JPEG and GIF and because I feel like it. Adapt or... miss out. =P)

Thanks go to Adam Bauer for providing the webspace to host the charts and all my other works. =]

Erm... I think you kind of left out the Miranda-II...

And the Curry has much larger nacelles than that. But you don't believe me on that...

And why did you suddenly add 2 meters to the Constellation?

And I still refuse to believe that the Niagara looks anything like that!

Here's a JPEG version.

That's en entirely unofficial version of the Niagara, but Adam refuses to remove it.

And "Curry" is supposedly the official name of the ship.

Thanks for the Fleet Chart and special thanks to Frank for the JPG version. I hate any browser 4.x.

I only have the top half by now (15 minutes), and I agree with most of it. I only haven't checked the Steamrunner myself so far.

The Constellation image from the Encyclopedia I is not very precise. The nacelles are a bit too small. The Fact Files diagram is better, although the saucer top (bridge) is a bit too much raised, whereas it is too flat in the Encyclopedia schematic. I have obtained a length of 315m.

Defiant: same problem as always...

Niagara: Unfortunately, it is probably official. We have to consider that the Freedom schematic was done the same way. And see: It was actually on screen at Wolf 359. Nevertheless, the Niagara could look completely different (I still hope so), considering the obvious flaws in the DS9TM that might have occured here likewise. Maybe the actual Niagara is even one of the ships I have recently spotted and tried to sketch.

Timeout. Loading was canceled. I'll try again tomorrow.

- I left out the M II beacuse there wasn't much point in including it. It's not different enough to warrent taking up space on my chart. I was gonna swap the M III for some other ship, but I decided to leave it in. I also decided to leave out the Challenger, just because I felt like it. =P

- Apparently that ship was named Curry Class after Dan Curry, a guy in the SFX dept. However, I prefer the name Shelley (for seveal reasons) and will continue to refer to it as such until I see "Curry" in writing.

- I know about the Constellation's nacelles. I'm just waiting until McReynolds scans Jackill's Constell diagrams for me. The nacelles would likely just add on 15-20m to the overall length, anyways.

I think that the same applies for the Niagara as for the Freedom. We did hear of the Freedom sooner, but considering information on "non-essential" ships is provided occasionally and only bit by bit, there's no reason to believe it's not a new model.

The image loading is currently at 92%, 97%, done.

The Centaur image is not very accurate. IMHO the nacelle tips should almost reach the raised center of the saucer bottom, yielding only 380m overall length.

The nose of the depicted Sydney is too sharp. I think my schematic is better.

RW: Quicktime is a shoddy Apple product that subverts half your file associations, especially in the Netscape plugin. I was looking into this last night, and it definitely changes PNG to be opened in Netscape using QT - and won't let you alter it! Best way is remove Quicktime, which isn't much of a loss.

Have a look - go to Edit/Preferences/Applications then scroll down to PNG. You'll see the 'edit' and 'Remove' features are greryed out. . if you uninstall QT, it changes to PNG Image, you can edit or remove it, and the default viewer should change to whatever it was before, PSP in my case.

Bernd: Gee, I love you too... *LOL*

Captain Stark:

- The Shelley is made out of to scale parts from the Excelsior and Miranda (nacelles to scale with the saucer, etc). 265m is the length of an Ex 2ndary hull, so there you go...

- The Phoenix lengths are without the booster, only the warship itself.

Ahh, son of a...! That's what happens when you read things too quickly. Sorry. =]

Sydney, yes... Using both the diagrams I had available (the old one from the SSD and Bernd's diagram) I just scaled the whole thing until the nacelles matched the nacelles on the Constitution II and Miranda in size. The bridges should also be in scale, but I chose to use nacelles instead.

Adam: The Curry's nacelles are not normal Miranda nacelles. As someone pointed out a while back, the Ex and Mir model kits that were most likely used to create the ship are on totally different scales, making the nacelles terribly outsized. Looking at the vidcaps from the episode, this seems to be the case. This is even supported by the DS9TM. Even if Drexler, in modelling the ships to diagram, assembled them incorrectly, he probably at least used the right parts, including the humongous nacelles...

Hey, i like

anyway a few things...

1) how can you assume that nacelles are all built the same size, look at the BOP's and their size variations. thats what irks me a little with the DS9TM, that Chakotay's ship can be taked on to an Intrepid, it is entirely too small to fit like that on the Intrepid class, I think we'd have to assume that there is ANOTHER size of dare i say it - peregrines/chakotay's ship...

Also, on one of the pics it has a runabouts nacelle pylons used - but these too look like the old - version that voyager was gonna be 's nacelle pylons

2) to look at that PNG pic - I just cntrl c'd it an then opened it in a paint package...

3) I wish down the line, even though i'm sure it'd be a big task - to have all the ships the same way - i.e. all shaded or all line drawings - especially those four from FC, the only versions of them seen are from the Enc

Nacelles: In my opinion, SF does NOT build their ships like Klingons and continously scale parts up and down. I am assuming that if various parts (ie: nacelles) from previous designs were used in the kitbashes, then the parts are all in their previous scales, regardless of how the actual model was built. If AMT had been smart and built all their models to the same scale, then the Shelley/Sydney/etc would look like they appear on my Chart. Any other matter of starship scaling which yields BOP-ish results (like the Raider), I blame soley on the SFX's dramatic imbellishment.

AndrewR: Yes, that would be a HUGE job... If Sternbach can ever talk Pocket Books into making a Jane's Guide-style Starship book, then we should have all matching diagrams. IF. =]

Go into windows explorer.
Select any .png file and hold down shift.
Right click on it, and select the 'open with' option.
Select to open with IE4.

Tick the box that say 'always use this program to open files of this type'.

Vorlon: I'm very grateful to you for not scaling up and down nacelles. I don't think the Curry/Shelley nacelles are taken from the out-of-scale AMT Constitution refit, that would make the ship look so ridiculous that even the worst starship designer should notice it:

http://www.uni-siegen.de/~ihe/bs/startrek/temp/giant-curry.jpg

If, however, they are smaller, why not postulate they are the same size as Constitution/Miranda nacelles.

It wasn't that hard, really. I just scanned on of the plainer diagrams out of the TNGTM and did some cut 'n pasting. I got the main body done during TrekSunday, added the windows/lifeboats/etc on Monday and put the chart out Sunday night.

The Olympic top diagram was even easier, about 4 hours.

Now, anyone interested in making Front views? =]

Lindsly: First, it's Shelley, not Sherry. As in Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein. Someone named it that after commenting that it was a veritable Frankenstein's monster of a ship. Secondly, if there was a registry on the ship, it wasn't visible onscreen. At least, not in any vidcap I've seen...

The episode "A Call to Arms" opens with the scene of ships returning to space. The camera pans from left to right.

*NCC-42111 *NX-74205 *NCC-45617

The first ship seen is the unnamed Excelsior Class(BTW has anyone made an attempt to get the name of this ship? Calling this ship "Anonymous" is getting boring.)with the registry NCC-42111. The next ship with a known registry is the USS Defiant (NX-74205). Then at the far left of the screen is the Shelley(or Curry or whatever) with the registry NCC-45617. The registry is seen on the saucer's upper section in front of the bridge. The best way to view this is to actually have the episode playing, not through vidcaps. Reasons? The quality of the vidcaps may alter the appearance of the original shots. Secondly, IMHO, the attempt to get words on a moving object is not always successful. The words or numbers become blurred in the photo or vidcap. For the record, the dimensions of my tv is 32" with high resolution screen.

Posted by Lindsly on :

continuation of comments

The only site I know of where there are vidcaps of the NCC-45617 is at Pedro's Shiporama. These images have been compressed to a size that's smaller than the original shots were designed for. The registry is the dark band that is to the left of the battle damage. Ex. in Excel, when I type a number that is larger than the cell can hold, the program translates this into #######. When I enlarge the cell, the cell shows the number 123456789. I believe that this is the effect being seen in the vidcaps. And that is why I suggest that someone view the episode on an actual tv and not on a vidcap that is about six inches high. My tv-32". Vidcap-~6". Difference-26". Extreme compression of image. Any questions?

I, too, am a big fan of the Starship charts. They are for me an invaluable resource as a size comparison as well as a good look at all the ships togther. My dream is to have all the ships shown, including Rigel, Challenger, Freedom, Niagara, and the new U.S.S Equinox hopefully before the summer's end. Seeing all the ships, yes ALL of them, would be wonderful. I also understand how much work it is, but well worth it based on the response Vorlon gets everytime there's an upate.

Such a Chart is not impossible, it just requires complete and accurate diagrams of all those ships.

As for the response, I must admit that it's been slightly less than what I was anticipating, actually... Don't get me wrong, THIS is still good, just not as good in general, as I expected. =[
