In late fall, the third edition of the Encyclopedia will come out. This edition will have 95 pages of additional information added on to the present text as a supplement. What new ships or classes do you think will be in the edition? And what are your hopes for the supplement?

Since it should include everything from DS9's War arc from ACtA to SoA and onwards, it'd better have a beastly huge amout of information on the Dominion War and the huge number of ships that fought in it.

However, being cynical in this venue, I will assume the worst, that it'll just have a bunch of non-data with pictures of those horrid ships from the DS9TM, until I see otherwise.

I tend to agree with you there First.
No way in hell will it cover up to the end of DS9, and doubtless another version will be out as Voyager draws to a close. I'm gonna save my hard-stolen pennies. (And rely on you guys to post scans of any new pics! )

I'll buy it, since it's supposed to be softcover anyway, but I'm not expecting much.

It had better be worth it. Aren't the extra 95 pages just added to the back or something?

I'm pretty much looking for ship names, regs. and classes, though I don't plan on buying it.

They could be corrected. But I'm not placing any bets on it.

So they arent even gonna put the new info in with the old just stick it in the back? This seems slighty lazy to me. Its not as if they have to do it by hand...with a computer it should be fairly simple to add it in.

If they're just going to stick in a supplement, why don't they sell it spearately, so those of us who already have two encyclopedias don't have to buy a whole new one?!

BTW, that's a rhetorical question. I'm well aware that they're just a buch of greedy bastards who don't care what we want as long as they get more money...

Word from Michael Okuda

[Wrote asking about new ships, especially the Relativity and Equinox.]

Sorry, unfortunately neither will be in the Encyclopedia, since our cut-off
for most material was well before the end of the season in order to meet the publisher's schedule. (We DID sneak in stuff from the end of DS9, but
that was waaay after the book was turned in, and it caused the publisher no end of grief, although they agreed it was important enough, so they did it anyway.)

To everyone who includes a message from a production member.
The message being sent and the message being received are two parts of the same document. When you present the document, include both messages. I have no understanding of what "Sorry, unfortunately neither will be in the encyclopedia..." means. What does neither refer to? If I saw the message being sent, I and others would know. If there is some information about yourself in the message, delete this information. However, keep the relevant portions.

Hobbes clearly gives the context for his response.

I druther they just come out with a @#$%ing SHIPS book, already.

"Jane's Fighting Starships" ?

Go over to the trek books page at simonandschuster.com and nag for it! I have!

(Unfortunately, the lady whose domain Trek reference books are apparently hasn't been able to see or answer messages there since last November or so. Their system's a mess, apparently.)
(On the other hand, the public forum there is for posting on just about anything Trek book-related.)

Sol: He might have added that in later. As you can see, his message was edited...

As for their deadlines... Why the hell would they have a deadline before the end of the season?! Do they really think we're so stupid as to want the book early, whether it's missing such a crapload of information or not?! I'm quite certain just about everyone here would rather wait a couple months than be missing all that! *fumes@publishers*

The encyclopedia was originally due out in June, I think. If they pushed it back, why didn't they include info up until the end of the season? Those shows were probably finished by April, or early May. Also, wasn't there some talk about six months or so ago about a book that listed ships? It was posted on one of the old forums, something like a ship identification guide (does anyone else remember this?). Finally, does anyone know if there are any new Jackill books or blueprints out? I haven't been to a convention in over a year, that's where Iusually see them

Sternbach has repeatedly said we'll see a Voyager TM before we see a Ships of Trek book, largely due to the absolutely titanic amount of time that would have to be put into a ships book. I can see where he's coming from.

Additionally, he's muttered something about a 10th anniversary edition of the TNGTM for 2001 with color illustrations and new stuff on the Sovereign. Now there's something I could sink my teeth into...

TSN: It has little to do with the publisher, I'll wager, and everything to do with the printer. Simply, putting out a book is hard work. They want to release it close to the holiday season, and because of that they have a very limited timeframe in which to work.

chaz: I spoke to a couple of folks at the last convention I went to, and they informed me that Jackill has "dropped off the face of the Earth" since publication of Volume 3. Apparently there was a divorce, and a new job, ad he doesn't seem to be doing anything trek-related anymore. Pity.

I was one of the folks talking about a ship ID guide, but there doesn't seem to be any new progress in that area, AFAIK.

It's liek what they did with the micro-machines. When they came out with the second set, they put one new one with two old ones so you had to buy three just to get one you didn't have.
