What makes a good, popular starship?

I believe a starship becomes popular when it is developed as a character integral to the series. A good example is the USS Enterprise.

A ship has to be shown frequently and prominently to become really popular, not only among starship experts. "Normal" Star Trek fans don't know what an Akira class is, and if shown the Encyclopedia diagram they can't remember it was shown in FC or MiaB or TotP.

Well, a popular starship in the actual Star Trek universe would be any starship that got you from A to B *grin*
