The Miranda class ship model in TNG: "Night Terrors" was labeled "USS Brittain" whereas the dedication plaque said "USS Brattain". Either spelling exists as a proper name, while it is highly unlikely that both versions are wrong and the ship is actually supposed to be the "USS Britain". The Star Trek Encyclopedia states the ship has been named for Walter Brattain, the co-inventor of the transistor, and the Fact Files adds that the mislabeling of the hull is an embarrassing error by Starfleet. It is in dispute whether the hull marking or rather the dedication plaque plus background information is the stronger evidence.

I personally go with the "Brittain" spelling due to the fact that I live on the Brittain road so I have no quarrels with the spelling

*can just picture the Starfleet tech painter saying, "Oops! Hey bud, do you think Command will notice that?"*
