I finally get to be the first one to post this, live from New York.Well, I just bought the latest edition of Star Trek The Magazine yesterday, with a Defiant technical briefing. As expected, you'll find the old Fact Files blueprints reconfigured to match the latest DS9TM placement of systems. Unfortunately, they didn't even get this one right - the locs of aft torp launchers move between views, as do the pulse phasers, while the image showing the Defiant fire quantum torpedoes (a proof for the fact that the triangles aren't merely sensor modules) is labeled as showing pulse phasers. Otherwise, I like the fact that the article is very much based on the show, even if the DS9TM has confused matters a bit. There is a technical briefing on the Hirogen which I've never seen onscreen, an article on designing DS9 (great stuff!), one on forms of propulsion by science consultant Andre Bormanis (warp scale changed in 2312???). It also explains quantum slipstream drive. Next issue will be on phaser theory and other cool bits, with an article on creating Okudagrams - looks like we get to see a bigger version of the original Defiant's Master Situation Display schematic WITH LABELS. Oh yes, and there is also a pic of that Utopian scene from the recent VOY ep - I think the Excelsior is NCC-42101, but I can't be sure.------------------ "Wrong again. Come on, how does quantum slipstream work? Could the number actually be 42111? Was there a schematic or some specs on the Hirogen ship? ------------------ *Obscure humorous pretentious Gaelic-Latin signature* Ex Asterige Scientia

The Defiant section came far from impressing me : It says four decks, has a torpedo launcher right where the deflector is, tells us the torpedo launchers are targetting systems, shows an image of phaser effects for quantum torpedoes, shows quantum torpedoes being fired for pulse phasers... But other than that, it's quite nice. ------------------ Elim Garak: "Oh, it's just Garak. Plain, simple Garak. Now, good day to you, Doctor. Yes, Bernd, it does have schematics of the Hirogen ship. I didn't get the issue myself, but I looked through the whole thing at Coles ------------------ All hands, brace for impact! WHAM!!

The extremely basic slipstream explanation I push forward in my amazing inaccurate explanation of warp speeds:"The second sort of transwarp is the transwarp conduit, and it is much faster. It also uses a deeper subspace domain than the first sort. (The lower transwarp domain.) Transwarp conduits, and their sister technology, the quantum slipstream, drives so deep into subspace that the vessel using them is wrapped inside a field that almost completely cuts it off from the rest of the universe. The one distinguishing thing about transwarp conduits, of course, is that they are permanent structures in space-time, unlike slipstreams, which are created on the spot." Hopefully the article agrees with me. ------------------ "Something I can't comprehend. Something so complex and couched in its equation. So dense that light cannot escape from." -- Soul Coughing

I don't know about that, but 'Dark Frontier' disagrees I believe it was Tom Paris who said: "A Borg vessel entered the conduit just before it closed."This is a reply to Sol System not to Hobbes. ------------------ Altair's Sci-Fi Homepage [This message has been edited by Altair (edited August 30, 1999).]

Hobbes, a smiley is a : followed directly by a ), thus : ) without the space in the middle. In Bormanis's article, the transwarp discussed seems to be based upon that of "Descent", a series of conduits which may be activated by will, as opposed to the system in "Dark Frontier" where you set where you want to go and a tunnel appears for a short time and then permanently closes. ------------------ Elim Garak: "Oh, it's just Garak. When it comes out, can someone scan every page of the phaser theory article? I guess it's about time I explained how these things worked. . .

Boris: The DS9TM has the original Defiant MSD with labels (p123). You can read the labels if you have good eyes. Strangely, one of the labels is censored.------------------ "Forgive me if I don't share your euphoria!" (Weyoun to Dukat, DS9 'Tears of the Prophets')

I know, that's why I said bigger version. I can read the labels, but it's more trouble than it's worth.Boris ------------------ "Wrong again. Can anyone scan every page of it, the ships with highest priority, followed by other schematic views and images?A better idea: Are some of the previous issues still available? In this case I would like to ask someone of you lucky Americans to buy every available issue *twice* and spend many more dollars to mail it to me. Any offers, any idea how we could handle the payment? I can assure you my bank account is currently more than sufficient. Please respond via e-mail. ------------------ *Obscure humorous pretentious Gaelic-Latin signature* Ex Asterige Scientia

Back issues may be hard to find. I have some friends who subscribed to the magazine as well and has duplicate copies of some of the issues that I might be able to get a hold of. If no one has responded to your email inquiry yet, I might be able to work out something to send issues to you.------------------ "Victory is Life!"
