Hmm. Well, if we go by registries, and make a few big assumptions about certain ships from ST VI, a roughly chronological list of ship classes would go...

Keep in mind that I make no claims as to the factual nature of this list. It's simply organized along the basis of earliest registry number per class. But it can provide an interesting foundation for further, uh...research. Yeah, that's it.

Actually, you're going at cross-purposes. Trinky-Winky's proposing an evolutionary tree, which can only be doomed to failure - after all, we don't know how many other classes there might be involved, ones we've never seen or never heard of. And I don't think the Niagara should be in there. It seems to be an Ambasssador variant, with little contributing towards the Nebula.
And a list of classes in chronological order is meaningless too. After all, we still don't know what registries represent, and several ship classes are probably being developed simultaneously.

A chronological order is a starting point, but is probably not sufficient. I think a tree should be created, based on the distinct "design families" like Constitution-Miranda-Constellation and Galaxy-Nebula. Secondly, the ships should be grouped by age (Constitution prior to Miranda), as far as it is known. Thirdly, connections could be made between ships of different ages, but similar purposes (e.g. Daedalus --> Constitution). Finally, it could be speculated how one ship design could have influenced another one that has nothing in common but certan design features (e.g. New Orleans saucer shape --> Galaxy).
I remember there was such a tree at Utopia Planitia, but with several branches I couldn't agree with. Someone still have it?
