In tonight's VGR episode "Alice", Paris claims his father took him up in a "S-Class Shuttle". Well, now we have a Class-2 Shuttle and an S-Class Shuttle. This is very confusing. I'll leave it to you guys to conjecture about this, I'm tired.

My biased opinion on the S-Class Shuttle is this

In a remarkable instance of continuity, there is a second mention to a classification system that existed in the 23rd century, and perhaps earlier. "The Menagerie, Part 1" is where the classification system is first used. The shuttle, designated as Shuttle 1 from Starbase 11, is identified by the USS Enterprise computer as Class F Starbase Shuttlecraft with duranium hull, 24 feet long, and having ion drive. (Yes, ion drive.) This shuttle is state of the art for the 2260's. The S-Class Shuttlecraft would be a model of shuttlecraft introduced after 2270. Ensign Paris described the shuttle as old and having flown it when he was eight. This would suggest that this model of shuttlecraft existed in the 2330's and 2340's. It is most likely a model of shuttlecraft we have never seen. (I do believe, though I am a lone voice, that Federation starships, shuttlecrafts, and certain models of spaceships common to Earth all were classified under a alphabetic designation until the mid-2280's. In the mid-2280's, the system we are familiar to came into existence. I include the S-Class shuttlecraft as part of my evidence. My full list-
Class F-Shuttlecraft "The Menagerie, Part 1"
Class J-Carrier "Mudd's Women"
Class J-Starship "The Menagerie, Part 1"
Class S-Shuttlecraft "Alice"
Class S-Starship "The Search for Spock")

Hi. This is my first post.
In "The Search for Spock" was "S class" spoken in dialogue or was it only on a monitor? The reason I ask is that the staff of this movie sometimes used pages from Franz Joseph's "Starfleet Technical Manual" rather than generating its own artwork. A schematic of the Constitution class from this book is shown, but only part of the legend is visible: "CLASS I HEAVY CRUISER" is shortened to "S I HEAVY CRUISER." Is this what you are talking about? I don't think this can be considered a proper designation.

Welcome to the forum, Masao

I wonder if "S-class" or "Class S" is rather correct from the liguistic point of view.

Maybe it's the Mercedes S-Class

On the other hand, S-Class and Class S could be exactly the same, only two different spellings.

*spams*

BTW, Masao, you could create a signature linking to the SF Museum.

Tasty status lines, on the other hand, are reserved to senior members.

Well, I didn't see "Alice" (I had to work, and the channel it's on is hardly visible normally, much less does it tape well), so I don't know for certain what was said, but is it possible that the shuttle was not Starfleet? We know SF uses numbered classes of shuttles, but the class-S may have been merely a Federation shuttle for interplanetary runs, or some such.

I think Currywurst is tasty if you don't have to eat them every day.

I'll take your word for it. Although a name of a food that sounds like curryworst I don't know about.

Did somebody already suggest that this shuttle could of been a civilian or personal, private shuttlecraft? While there's no need for it with transporters it wouldn't suprise me if a lot of people on Earth own their own shuttlecraft.

That full scale shuttle model in Voyager's shuttlebay set is an interesting thing. Looks like one of the full size shuttles built for ST:V, then modified for ST:TNG, then modified again to look like the Type 9 shuttle that Voyager carries, then modified again to be Paris' shuttle from hell.

Hobbes: Well, technically, if you go w/ the German pronunciation, it sounds more like "voorsht" than "worst". :-)
