Well, now we have a Class-2 Shuttle and an S-Class Shuttle. This is very confusing. "The Menagerie, Part 1" is where the classification system is first used. The shuttle, designated as Shuttle 1 from Starbase 11, is identified by the USS Enterprise computer as Class F Starbase Shuttlecraft with duranium hull, 24 feet long, and having ion drive. (Yes, ion drive.) This shuttle is state of the art for the 2260's. The S-Class Shuttlecraft would be a model of shuttlecraft introduced after 2270. Ensign Paris described the shuttle as old and having flown it when he was eight. This would suggest that this model of shuttlecraft existed in the 2330's and 2340's. It is most likely a model of shuttlecraft we have never seen. (I do believe, though I am a lone voice, that Federation starships, shuttlecrafts, and certain models of spaceships common to Earth all were classified under a alphabetic designation until the mid-2280's. In the mid-2280's, the system we are familiar to came into existence. I include the S-Class shuttlecraft as part of my evidence. The reason I ask is that the staff of this movie sometimes used pages from Franz Joseph's "Starfleet Technical Manual" rather than generating its own artwork. A schematic of the Constitution class from this book is shown, but only part of the legend is visible: "CLASS I HEAVY CRUISER" is shortened to "S I HEAVY CRUISER." Is this what you are talking about?
