i was just wondering. Isn't the e-e supposed to be a bit bigger than ~685m-is-it. I noticed that the windows, escape pods, and the bridge is a bit smaller than the galaxy's. I figured that the e-e's main hull is just a 90deg rotated galaxy main hull. so i did that. it didn't fit perfectly, but when i compared the two ships, the windows, pods, and bridge had a closer size to the galaxy's.

The Ent-E is 2248ft (685m) long. I don't see any problem with this figure. It fits the structure of the ship quite nicely, actually.

The length of the Soverign Class is for now cast in stone. The Galaxy Class though, the stone just broke. First, it was 641m in the TNG Tech Manual, then 642 in the DS9 Tech Manual. I am now confused.

I don't remember the TNGTM giving a length for the Ent-D. I don't suppose you know what page that figure comes from? As far as I know, the Galaxy-class is 2108ft (642.5m) long. That figure is in the DS9TM and on the SciPubTech cut away poster. Of course, 1m doesn't make stuff all difference.

The TNGTM doesn't give any explicit size figures. 641 meters comes from the Encyclopedia, the SciPubTech poster says 642.5, while Rick Sternbach confirms it as 2108 feet (=642.5m) in three of his rec.arts.startrek.tech posts.

Uh...people ships of specific class don't have to all be the same exact length. It is not uncommon for a popular design to be modified over a period of several ships actually being launched. A couple good examples are the Iowa class battleships, and the Nimitz Class Carriers. The U.S.S. Wisconsin I believe is the longest Iowa class due to an accident where the bow was damaged in some kind of collision, its eventual repair came from the never completed U.S.S Kentucky. The Kentucky was suppose to be largest of the Iowa's, but due to congress cutting funding it was never completed, so components were scabbed for repairs to the Wisconsin. I don't really recall the name of the latest Nimitz carrier, something like U.S.S STENISE, but in any case the way I understood it was that being the last of the class, and being the longest of its class it was suppose to be some kind of transition carrier for the future.

As of now, I believe the USS George Washington CVN-73 is currently the largest Nimitz Class, beating out the USS Abraham Lincoln CVN-72 by 15 feet, since there is something on the front end, a net or something. I could be wrong though, it was on some show on the Discovery Channel. Also, the unnamed carrier CVN-77 will serve as a bridge between the Nimitz Class and what is currently being called the "Evolved Nimitz Class". CVN-78 will be the first ship of this new class, which is signifigant in that it lacks most of the tower and such on top of the deck, making the ship much more flat. Also, the ship you mentioned is the USS John C. Stennis CVN-74, which isn't the most recent. USS Harry S. Truman CVN-75 was launched in 1998 and USS Ronald Reagan is planned to be launched in New Year's Eve 2002.

bear: Well, there doesn't tend to be any external variety amongst ships in the one class in Trek. Unless you compare ship from different variances of the same class eg. the original and refit Constitution, and the normal and modified (Ent-B) Excelsior.
AndrewR: SciPubTech produce a variety of posters which depict cut-aways of a ship (or DS9) with call-outs and specs. They should still be available.
Side note - has anyone got the BoP poster? What does it give for length?

Ahhhh yes, If I remember - there is a ED, EA, DS9 and BOP poster... you can't get em in Australia - since the fine print says US and Canada only - thats in those magazines...
anyway I have seen that DS9 one isn't it really CRAP though... it has like 3 decks for the habitat ring or the docking ring - it looks really rushed - or really 'unthoughtout'

AndrewR: Hey, I didn't know you live in Australia I'm stuck over here in Perth, West Oz. Anyway, I've got a cheap reproduction of the E-D cutaway which was released by Impact. It was only about $10. I've seen the proper DS9 and E-E cutaway on import. I wish I bought the E-E one when I saw it. It looked pretty good but it's gone now
Oh, I don't think there's an Ent-A one, but there's one of the Ent-nil (before refit). The nil poster seems to depict warp cores in the nacelles themselves, rather than in the secondary hull. Is that feasible?

Dax: There was a big arguement over that a while back. Personally, it seems to me that, since the dilithium chamber (and, hence, the M/ARC) was shown to be in engineering, the warp core can't be in the nacelles.

Yes, a cutaway poster was put out for ST:TMP in 1979. There were other small cutaway posters of the 1701A and of the EntD included with some AMT kits, I think when Generations was released. Unfortunately, the 1701A poster has Shatner's big puffy face on it.

ziip: The windows, phaser strips, and lifeboats are all actually smaller on the Sovereign. The deck height is more important though, and I feel it is rather taller on the Sovereign.
AMT included the Ent-A poster for the Trek 25th Anniversary, and the Ent-D poster was for the 30th. Both the posters are really very good and the D poster is horribly rare, aswell.
Indeed, the decks in Galaxy-class engineering hull are relatively small.
