I dunno if this topic has been done to death or not, seeing as how I'm fairly new here, but what are everyone's favorite classes? Just curious. Mine are the Defiant(of course) and the Akira. Mainly because I like ships of war for whatever reasons. Plus the designs are rather unique in my opinion. I'm not a huge fan of the soverign though, I don't really know why either.

I used to like the Akira most of all, but I've kinda gotten bored with it. I do like the Steamrunner, and the Soyuz has grown on me since I started drawing a whole new schematic from scratch.

Galaxy. I like the living room atmosphere and it's amazing how such a massive ship can look so elegant.

The Akira is the best, followed by the Prometheus and the Ent-E. The Miranda is the best of the older ships.

I like the Chimera, since we've never seen it.

Actually, my favorite is probably the Miranda. It has one coherent hull, actual weapons structures, a compact shape, etc. And it doesn't look like a jellyfish.

The Akira comes first (man, almost everyone seems to love that ship...) because of its elegance despite its radical departure from standard Starfleet design...

I also like the Sabre a lot since it kinda looks like a Manta ray (and I'd love to see a more detailed version in the next movie but I'm sure it won't happen).

And finally the Excelsior and its refit which have been my favourites for a long time. From the moment I saw it in ST3:TSFS I began to like the Constitution a lot less.

Gotta go with Defiant, Akira, and Steamrunner in no particular order. I could give you a "like/ dislike" rundown on every ship we've seen (as I'm sure very many members could :-) ) but that would take alot of room.

I've always liked the pre-refit Enterprise (NCC-1701 -- no prefix).

Prior to Star Trek, all "spaceships" in science fiction were either rocket ships or glorified frisbees. The TOS Enterprise was a significant departure from either concept. Just looking at it you realized this was a different kind of ship. It wasn't a rocket or a UFO, but something brand new.

Bradbury class. A slightly bigger intrepid with the nacelles always in the folded-up position.
Upgraded like the Lakota with all the tactical stuff of 2375-76!

Strictly canon, you say? Well, then I'd have to go with the Excelsior. There's something about it that makes me think "Rolls Royce".

Excelsior, the NX- or NCC-2000 versions, not the E-B version. Something about its sleekness (as compared to the ships before it) but its retention of the "old" look.

I really like the Galaxy-class. It is the most beautiful, unique, yet practical Enterprise design.

I've never been very impressed with the Intrepid-class. The tiny nacelles and forward facing pylons make it look unbalanced and deformed.

Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder (especially with something like starships).

It's kinda funny how people only like some classes because they 'Could kick the shit out of whatever'. It seems to me that if TPTB put a super-powered-pulse phase-cloak-that-fires-quantum-cobalt-transistor-mines-while-cloaked on a shuttlecraft, these people would be 'Oh hell yeah, I love that Type-9XXX Shuttle, it could kick some ass!'

I think actual appearance should factor in some, too.

My favorites are the TOS Enterprise and the Refit Enterprise. They are the alpha and the omega of Federation ship design. The original Excelsior is a close second (The refit was ill-advised). The Galaxy is third. All these ships are sleek and elegant.

I don't like the more recent ships with no necks as much. Shock of the new, I guess. Maybe I'll get used to them eventually. I do like the new CGI warships from FC and the Defiant since they represent a fresh way of thinking about Fed designs. However, the Intrepid looks a bit squat and dwarfish to me since it tries (unsuccessfully, I think) to fuse the original "neck and nacelles" style with a new blunter style.

I also like the USS Sulaco, the Orion Spaceplane, the Spinner (Blade Runner), Tie Fighters, and Starfuries (B5). Yes the Gunstar is pretty cool.

You asked for it!

Stuff I like:
-Excelsior-class has been my favorite since I first laid eyes on Excel herself in STVI. She's graceful and fluid but has a definite strength. For the record, I'm in the anti-refit camp.
-Akira-class is by far my pick of the FC ships. Probably the most elegant "warship" I've ever seen.
-Sovereign-class. 'Cause I like it, that's why.
-Galaxy-class will always have a place in my top ten, because I got hooked on Trek watching TNG. For right now, it's here because it managed to be elegant even though it was so damned big.
-Prometheus edges out Nova class by a hair. I'm not wild about it's "three, three, THREE ships in one!" aspect, but put together it's the only quad-nacelled ship I like.

Stuff I don't like:
-Sabre-class looks like it's pointing the wrong way, which is a neat trick to pull off when I know that Fed ships have their nacelles aft.
-Oberth-class may be functional, but it's just not very aesthetic.
-Constellation-class. Ick and double ick. No, better make that quadruple.
-Deep Space Nine Technical Manual. ESPECIALLY the Excel kitbashes! There oughtta be a law!
-Intrepid-class. Everything the Sov does right, it does wrong.

In general:
I tend to go for designs which are unconventional in one way or another but are still very sleek, anything that conveys raw power channeled into something stately and graceful. I detest kitbashes (Challenger), but I don't have anything against a decent rearrangement of parts (Miranda).

The Dominion Battle Cruiser (not that ultra large one, although it ranks high on the list) is by far the best Star Trek ship design. The Negh'Var (Klingon Flagship) is a very cool one too.

Other top 10 best non-federation ships:
- Cardasian Keldon Class
- Romulan Warbird
- Those 2 races helping Voyager to defeat the Krenim Timeship

That's my problem with the Vor'cha - it's just too plain. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

BTW, does anyone know where the Vor'cha fwd torpedo launcher is? Does it even have one?

That's a problem with many ships - there just isn't a surface feature anywhere that would correspond to a torp tube. Which is why my favorite is the New Orleans... It isn't difficult to tell where her big guns are supposed to be Miranda is a close second, for similar reasons.

The Nebula Class ships are nice esthetically.. I like those as well.

Heres an unscientific tally of the votes. I didnt weight the votes for first, second, and third like they do for baseball MVP, since some people listed favorite ships in no particular order. I just counted how many times someone mentioned the ship favorably.

1. Akira: 10 votes
2. Galaxy: 7 votes
3. Excelsior: 6 votes
4. Defiant, Intrepid, Sovereign: 5 votes
5. Prometheus, Miranda, EntA: 4 votes
6. Steamrunner, Sabre, Ent0, Nova, Danube, New Orleans, Nebula: 2 votes
7. Soyuz, Centaur, Ambassador, Workbee (!): 1 vote

DID SOMEONE SAY BRADBURY? Got pics? I would like to see them.

I enjoy the T'pau "Apollo" Class. Simple yet serves a purpose.

Hey do you think the Defiant front looks like the Ark from Transformers or vice versa? Have we seen a similar fronts on other ships too?

Well, the alien ship in the South Park episode "Cartman Gets An Anal Probe" is DEFINITELY the Defiant seen from the front. . . 8)

As the DS9TM notes, the Defiant is horribly similar in appearance to the Cardassian Hideki-class. Funnily enough, they were both designed by Martin.
