Exactly what, does everyone think the tactical power of the Keldon or the Galor Class is. I mean, I was recently watching the series premier of DS9. 3 Galor class vessels could barely handle an almost defencless station. Then I remembered the series finale, when the Cardassians switch sides...a couple of shots with the main phaser arrays are able to cut Breen ships to bits.

So are the Breen ships extremely weak, or what? IMO, the Galor class is a pretty weak ship, the Keldon class not being much more powerful.

I'm sure there are some examples that I can't remember, anyone know of other episodes where the power of Galors or Keldon's is shown?

One answer could be that they were attacking weakend ship or the dominion could have vastly improved their phasers. The galor is the standard cardie ship and the keldon is the more powerful version. They are small yet big enough to cause a problem for most other ships. I believe two or three is enough to take on a galaxy.

The Cardassians themselves like to call the Galor and the Keldon "cruisers", but Sisko has used the word "destroyer" a couple of times. This might tell of the perceived power relationships - generally, destroyers of today are small attrition ships compared with cruisers.

In "The Wounded", one Nebula easily pasted two Galors; in "Ensign Ro", two of the most modern Galor variants waited until the E-D withdrew before firing at a pitiful Bajoran impulse ferry. In "Chain of Command", Jellico was confident the E-D could single-handedly take care of 15 Galors. The DS9 Tech Manual says it takes more than 15 Galors to overwhelm one-third of the current station defences. And we have never really seen a Galor or even a Keldon pull off a real military victory before they turned on the Breen.

One might think that either the ships were indeed boosted by Dominion tech and expertise, or then the captains knew some dirty little secrets like Breen shield frequencies and structural weaknesses...

I think the inside scoop and the element of surprise definately helped the Cardies when they turned on the Dominion.

I think it was in "The Wounded" when Picard said they could read Cardie transponder codes. At that point in the series, I don't think the Cardies were supposd to be a major power.

BTW, remember that there seem to be several types of Galors (the strongest were described as "type 3" in TNG).

A Galor wasn't even good enough to take out Chakotay's ship in 'Caretaker'...

A Galor class was all but destroyed by 3 Birds of Prey in 'Way of the Warrior'.

And although they did destroy a few Federation fighters in 'Sacifice of Angels', they took a heavy beating by a few phaser shots of 2 Galaxy class ships.

BTW: Can anyone check what happened with the Keldon class ships that was part of Tains fleet to destroy the shapshifters homeworld??

I think the Galor class is really a destroyer and not a cruiser...

cardassian ships are known to be "weak" in comparsion to the ships ot the other major races...

remember when the maquis stole the defiant? i don't remember how much ships the defiant destroyed but i know it was a lot of ships...

And in the same episode the defiant destroyed an cardassian station! Are other cardassian stations pure crap and the only good one is DS9? i mean the defiant is starfleets most powerful ship and all but how can one ship destroy a Starbase?

BTW: The Obsidian order upgraded a few Keldon class before the attack on the Dominion homeworld. Did they ever mention if this upgrade was also done to other Keldon/Galor class ships?

All of the Obsidian Order/TalShiar fleet was destroyed by the Dominion. There were only 40 ships, which couldn't have been that big of a threat, especially with the set up by that Changeling.

As for Cardie bases, remember, DS9 was not a strong station at all when the Federation took over, even though they stripped it of everything of value.

I also doubt that 1 Galaxy Class could handle 15 Galor class vessels. 7 or 8, if it's lucky, 5 for sure.

The "The Die is Cast" battle tells us little about the capabilities of the upgraded Keldons - when they fire on the planet, the Romulans also fire so we could say the Cardassians contributed next to nothing to the destruction; and when the Jemmies attack, the Cardassians do not fire a single shot back!

In "Defiant", the Defiant actually destroys no ships at all. She wounds one Galor IIRC, and destroys that "outpost" which probably wasn't a DS9-sized station at all. Some 15 ships chase her at the end, and the prognosis isn't good according to Kira.

As for variants of Galors and Keldons... We know that a Galor can fire beams from the unlikeliest of places (since the effects people probably never agreed with the modelmaker that those little transparent pyramids are supposed to be beam emitters). Perhaps this is proof of variants (rather than saying that all ships have beam emitters all over the hull)?

Also, the beams in "The Wounded" were pinkish instead of yellowish, suggesting another possibly earlier variant. Perhaps Jellico thought he would be facing 15 of these weak variants? And the type 3 ships in "Ensign Ro" were the only ones seen firing torpedolike weapons.

In the Encyclopedia, Galors seem to have two small side-by-side shuttlebay doors on the lower hull flanks (plus bigger ones forward and aft), while Fact Files pictures show one wide door per side. Which one is correct from modeling point of view? All I've got to work with is a short promo bit on DS9 season 6, which opens with a view of a CGI Galor on a lower pylon of DS9. That ship has only one wide door per side - but what about the original physical model?
