Alternative reason for the name Merced for a starship and class.
In San Francisco, which is home to the StarFleet, there is a lake called Lake Merced. I am thinking that a Starfleet ship designer may have named a ship and class after this lake. Any thoughts?

Also could have been named after the city of Merced, California. Other classes have been named after cities, including New Orleans and Istanbul.

Or lakes. There was a USS Huron in the animated series; oddly enough, I think James Doohan grew up near Lake Huron

After all, why not? The Danube-class are all named after rivers...

I think Bozeman and Billings are probably even more boring than Merced, so I assume it can be the city.
