Alternative reason for the name Merced for a starship and class. In San Francisco, which is home to the StarFleet, there is a lake called Lake Merced. I am thinking that a Starfleet ship designer may have named a ship and class after this lake. Any thoughts?------------------

Also could have been named after the city of Merced, California. Other classes have been named after cities, including New Orleans and Istanbul.------------------ The Starship Encyclopedia

Or lakes. There was a USS Huron in the animated series; oddly enough, I think James Doohan grew up near Lake Huron After all, why not? The Danube-class are all named after rivers... ------------------ "Replicate some marmalade, Commander - helm control is toast!"

I think Bozeman and Billings are probably even more boring than Merced, so I assume it can be the city.------------------ "Species 5618, human.
